I'd like to give someone an Ipod for Christmas but I'm not sure the family has a credit card. They can use a relative's but I would rather know in advance - can you set up an Itunes account for the first time without a credit card?

I would also gift an Itunes card so they would have some money on the account, but don't want to give this gift if it's going to be a hassle or impossible.

Thanks in advance!!

you just get itunes gift cards, they sell them everywhere! I have even seen them in stop & shop and target...bed bath and beyond!

iTunes is free to download.

I think that if you give them a card, they can load that in as credit on the account, without a credit card on file. The problem is that the amount never quite comes out even.

So they can download iTunes for free and then use gift cards for purchases, without having to ever have a credit card? That's what I was hoping they could do.

What do you mean "come out even?" I would just give them an Itunes card to load and when they spent it they could buy others in the future themselves. Can't they just have a running balance from a gift card?

Yes. They add tax to anything they download, so we always seem to have a gift card balance in odd cents available.

I don't currently have a credit card associated with our account (DS15 decided to "go shopping" one day....), so I'm fairly certain they don't need it.

No tax on downloads. I mean it might be added into the price but when it says .99 that's exactly what they withdraw from my credit. (I never put my cc on, I buy itunes cards and everytime I log in to my account it shows my balance). However I tunes cards come in even dollar amounts and dowloads always come in non even amounts (.99, 1.39, 3.99, etc) so you only even out like every 99 downloads or so. LOL

Now if you're downloading from Amazon or another third party site they may tax but the itunes store does not.

Thanks, I saw that when I was browsing on the site earlier but it's about the App store, not the Itunes store, so it didn't answer my question. It looks like I can have them just download an Itunes account for free and give them an Itunes gift card to get them started.

Thanks!!

I always buy I-Tunes gift cards at my grocery store because they give 20 cent gas discounts (per gallon) for every $50 gift card purchased. It's very easy to load the gift card into I-Tunes and make purchases.
