I think you misunderstood my point. It's the people who are being told their rooms aren't ready until 4 who are raising all of the fuss.
I just re-read this thread and I thought I was clear about this, but I guess not.
There's actually two underlying threads in this thread. First, how OKW will assign rooms to people who have pre-requested something particular. That was the original topic, and a subject of great concern since it seems reasonable to me that an OKW owner would have not only 'getting a room' priority over me (a non-OKW owner), but 'getting a specific type of room' priority. This test OKW is doing seems to be in part a reaction to the complaints the CM's on the desks are taking when a guest is checking in and either the request isn't being filled because some one else got their request in earlier (i.e. the reservee seems to think this is a right, not a perk) OR the room they requested is assigned to them, but won't be ready until 4:00.
The test is specifically to assign rooms based on first come, first served on the day of check-in. While this is 'fair' in one sense, it's also not fair that a guest walking in off the street paying cash should have a higher priority than a owner who reserved day by day at the 11 month mark with the same request when that cash-paying person just happens to be there earlier in the day than the owner.
The second devolution in this thread is the fact that OKW is reacting to this at all. That's more where I came in, and it seems silly to me for anyone to be upset when the room isn't ready until they said it would be. If it's ready at 8:00 am, great...that's a bonus, not a right. I also mentioned that it might be possible for said guest to 'change' their request and get a room that is available and ready and give up their request. We then clarified that 'changing' the room would not bump another guest with a special request.
Believe me, I'm on your side of the fence when it comes to this topic. I generally don't care about the room (other than it being a 2-Br when I reserve a 2 Br, etc). I expect that they'll all meet my expectations.
With regard to
DVC being the only place that actually doesn't have a room for you at checkin, that is probably very much a DVC thing. 1) Since they assign you a room (other than this test) days before check-in, it seems there's little flexibility for your room assignment to be changed, at least not without requesting to see if there's another room available. 2) Most 'hotels' have two types of rooms...smoking and non. When a person checks in at a regular hotel, its very easy to poll at that time and see which rooms meet the smoking/non criteria for the duration of your stay. Since very few people make requests beyond smoking or non, its very easy for the hotel to swap around rooms or even wait to assign them until the guest checks in. After all, the guest has little clue or care which room they're assigned until they actually want to drop their luggage off. The fact that there are a good number of 'special requestees' seems to pre-empt DVC from being this flexible. As someone else alluded to, the dissemination of information about 'making special requests' on the Internet can be a bad thing.
