Hi Everyone! I'm new here and not sure where to start. Is there a list to sign up? Would appreciate any information about this group. I'm WAY overweight and in desperate need of some support. TIA

Kim

Hi, Kim. I'm new here too. I need to do something and fast! I want to lose weight so bad but I just can't seem to motivate myself. One more day of Burger King.....one more day before I start exercising....etc.

I am about 25 pounds overweight but I keep gaining slowly. I am in fairly good shape---I was in really good shape before my 4th baby. Well now he is almost 3 and I've exercised on and off but I just have to get "back into it!"

Now we are cruising in 8 weeks and I can't even fit into the clothes I have that are matching to the rest of the family. I can't afford to go out and buy new ones--and of course I don't want to. I think I can't get started because I just keep procrastinating. I did this before our last cruise and never lost. Just decided that it was "OK that my clothes were tight."

So how can we get each other motivated???? Please help me too!!! :flower:

Hi, Kim & Deb! Welcome to WISH. We are just a bunch of people who are trying to get healthy and fit. There are all sorts of plans to lose weight and pretty much all of them are represented here.

I am doing Weight Watchers, though I don't go to meetings. I journal everything I eat through weight watchers on line and I keep a journal here on the WISH boards to keep myself accountable, to track how I am doing and to have something to look back at. Most of all, though, I do it to get support from other people who face or have faced the same struggles I have.

Kim -- I think you will enjoy looking at the various "program-oriented" threads like WW, Firm, South Beach, Atkins, etc. to find a group of like-minded people and find some support there.

Deb -- I have been where you are. The reality is, you are just going to have to make a decision and stay as committed to it as possible. Most of us start with baby steps. Decide what you are doing right and do more of it (ie swimming, walking, eating veggies, etc.) and figure out what you are doing wrong and do less of it (ie eating out too much, late night eating, chips instead of fruits, etc.). Unfortunately, your clothes are not going to fit unless YOU do something. This is one area of our lives where we are the ones in control. We can't blame our food choices on anyone else. We are adults. There is a sign hanging in my office that says "It is the choices I make that determine the person I become" I still have to remind myself every day that improvement only comes with effort.

So, what commitment are you willing to make to yourself today? Are you going to get through the day with no junk food? Are you going to eat a salad for lunch? Are you going to go for a 20 minute walk? It all starts with a decision and a choice. Commit and commence.

Okay, now I just gave myself a very needed pep talk (check out my journal for the saga of my strugggle. It will make you feel better.)

Have a great day!

Welcom to WISH Kim and Deb!

Yup, you have found the BEST goup ever. You will so love it here.

My contribution to the great suggestions is to not use the D-word. Make your commitment to be healthier by making better eating choices and commit to some sort of movement, whatever that is for you. If you do this the rest will come.

Come often, post lots.
Keep on keepin' on.

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcome and encouragement. I'll try my best not to let you down and show how much I appreciate the support.

To start out I've decided to eliminate "gratuitous" sugar. You know, candy, soda, cookies, desserts. I can't have artificial sweeteners so it's best if I just eliminate them altogether. I've also started to exercise again. I have lupus and am frequently in pain, so that's causing me to have to start out VERRRY slowly. I rode my exercise bike for 5 min. yesterday and 6 min. today. Better than nothing! I have lost 1 lb. since cutting the sugar out 2 days ago. One down, 101 to go!

I am relatively new to WISH too - about six weeks. I find the exercise challenge goals - you choose how many minutes you will exercise a month and you go for that - are great. I challenged myself to 800 minutes in May and I made it to 1000, so I challenged myself to 1200 for June and am at over 400 now, so I know I will make that. It is really keeping me motivated to exercise and I think - no, I know - that is so important for me. There was a great article in Time this week about the importance of exercise... that has to be vital in my health plan.
Other great tools are the daily exercise thread. After exercise it feels good to post you have done it. I also signed up for the June weight loss challenge.
I also like the Journals just because I have been thinking of journaling for awhile and this is a place where others give feedback and encouragement too.
I agree with Tiger Lily that you don't need to use the D word. I am on the South Beach Diet right now, but am not using that word... I am changing my lifestyle and exercise and eating habits. The boards here keep me encouraged and accountable.
Welcome.
I don't know if I ever signed the "official" Wish list...

HI Everyone. I am new to WISH and pretty new to the DIS. I too am seriously overweight and really need to do something and fast. I too keep telling my self that I just want to have fast food one more time and then I am done. I have had one too many one more times.

I do need advice though if anyone could share. I am a very picky eater. I don't like vegetables, except corn and I only eat a few fruits. I don't like any sort of melon or real sweet stuff. So I am kinda stuck on what to eat for snacks. Currently I try to eat granola bars, but after looking at the label on some of those, they don't look like they are all that great. I could be wrong. My main meals are the biggest problem. I don't eat meat but chicken and my DH does not eat any meat at home. He will only eat chicken when we go out. I love anything with cheese and eggs. We have pizza a lot, I know, not good for me. I am not big on salads, but I will eat one every now and then. It is just really hard to me to find something good, yet healthy to eat. My Dh is not over weight so he does not need to eat the same things that I do. My lunches are very hard. I usually have a sandwich or I bring a frozen tv dinner. I guess what I am trying to get at is that I am at a loss at what to eat. Can anyone help?

I do exercise not as I should, we have a bowflex and an ellipitcal. I can't afford to join WW or any of the other programs, so I have to try and do this on my own.

Any help/advice would be great.

Thank you in advance.

Jamie

Hi Everyone and Welcome!!!

For all the new ones starting out, a few suggestions. If you haven't done it already, try reading some of the journals. They helped inspire me to get in shape and lose weight. Then start your own journal. I started mine when I joined in Aug 2004 and write in it almost every day.

WATER, WATER, WATER!!!

I think this is the base for any weight loss program. I drink an average of 120 ounces per day and I seriously think this has helped me.

If you have an questions, ASK. People on here are so great and supportive you'll find answers to most, if not all your questions.

And don't give up... if you have a bad day or even a bad week, get over it and start fresh.

Good luck :shamrock:

Hi there and welcome!

I too am about 50 pds. overweight and struggle everyday with temptations. I went on Oprah.com (her boot camp section) and printed out her monthly walking calendar. I find it helpful to record my walks and it also helps to see my progress on paper and not worry about the scale.

Iam so motivated and excited about my new healthy lifestyle, that I've decided to participate in the half marathon, at Walt Disney World, 2006.

It is really a change of attitude, lifestyle and not putting one self down all the time........We Can Do It :cheer2:

Where in Colorado do you guys live? I'm in Copper Mtn. and if you're close by maybe we could be walking buddies? :cool1:

Hi Monte - I'm in Littleton, so a little bit of a walk :goodvibes Sounds like you have a good program lined up, so just try and stick with it.

Oh, forgot to mention, join some of the challenges on here. It really helps you stay on track and with WW, I have to write EVERY bit I eat and I think that helps also.

Thanks everyone.Monte I love in Brighton, so another fairly far walk....

Well I have been reading through some of the journals and I am really motivated. I can't wait to get started. The only thing from stopping me is finding something healthy to eat. I have to go shopping and I am still really at a lose as to what to buy. Like I said I have been reading through the journals and I am getting some great idea's there but it is just so hard. It seems that I will be cooking for me and then again cooking for my DH. He is not going to want to eat what I eat. That I know.

I think that I will be starting my own journal. That way I know that if I do something wrong, I have to share it. Right know I hide everything that I do wrong. I hide it from my DH because I am so afraid that he is going to be mad at me. But I guess I have to stop hiding huh.

Well Thanks. I know that you will be hearing from me again!
