I need a new disney hat, my old one seems to have shrunk, or my head got larger, idk which. anyway, i can't find any i like. i need to cover my ears, have it be lightweight and crushable and not too heavy. bucket hats can be heavy, so can safari hats. any other alternatives to lightweight ones for women?

I must have tried 8-10 different hats that never felt right. Thank goodness returns are easy on Amazon. Then I stumbled on to this hat. It is really lightweight and can fit in the interior zipper of my suitcase. It can also be packed flat, since the only part that has any stiffness to it is the brim. It may not be the most fashionable, but it does the job. My head is about 23" around so I got the large and it fits great. Plus its a 50+ UPF rating.

that's my second question: does a hat have to have spf rating vs. none. is there really an actual difference or is it a scam

It’s not a scam they use special materials to get the rating. The reasoning is it’s a lighter material than cotton. But a heavy non rated cotton hat is just as good but heavier and they won’t dry as quickly as the spf ones. I personally use the cotton ones because they are softer than the spf ones, after sweating into the headband of the spf ones I find they irritate my forehead.

Costco had some nice packable light colored brimmed hats recently. I got one love it. Fully adjustable.

yes this answers my question. my old one that is not good is super super light weight cotton and pliable and comfortable but spf ones seem harsher. i c my old soft cotton one on amazon and wasn't sure if i should buy it again because it's not spf. would it still be ok in the hot sun to block sun rays just because it's not considered official spf rated?

This is the hat that currently protects my upper body from the sun in FL. Packs easily, good UPF rating and stylish. It's not for everyone which is fine by me even though the man despises it with all his heart and soul:lmao::

Nice looking hat with much potential and I disagree with your assessment that it lacks fashion points. I'm loving the white and grey but wish it came in more colours like red and yellow or navy blue and white

I'm considering this one as it's my belief that one cannot have too many hats (my grandmothers would be thrilled the tradition is being continued while my mother rolled her eyes at my affections/affectations ;)):

It should be fine just combine it with a little sunscreen. The only reason they advertise spf is because they are using thinner fabrics with a tighter weave to block the sun.

Those are some big hats!!!!

Can't say I'm aware of any scam involved with UPF and hats but here is some basic info on protecting your skin while wearing hats:

"Your best bets for optimal protection? A tightly knit straw hat or one made of thick, opaque, darker-colored fabric. If you’re not sure about your choice, take the easier route and look for options that have UPF—AKA ultraviolet protection factor—listed on the label. Rhee says most of them have a UPF of 50 or greater, which means “only 1/50th of the UV rays will penetrate the material.”

But, no matter how well a quality hat can protect you from the sun, make sure it’s not your only form of defense. “Wearing a hat, of course, doesn’t mean you can skip the sunscreen,” Dr. Rhee says. “Ambient sun exposure can be reflected off the water, sand, and other surfaces. This means that even with a wide-brimmed hat, you can be susceptible to the harmful UV rays if your skin isn’t adequately protected.”

this is very interesting. so yes, ideally if i want to protect the top of my head, which i do i would need to buy the spf hat while uncomfortable will really work best for five days in disney in sun/heat on the top of the my head. ideally. but if it's not comfortable i may not be apt to wear it!!

You don’t have to buy spf, a normal cotton hat will do. The spf rating is given to thinner fabrics that may not look to be protective. A normal cotton hat will do. I have both and normally wear my non rated ball cap, go Yankees, and not once have I gotten sunburn. I’m in New Orleans, which is very comparable to Orlando weather and sun.
