New DVC Owner - Question about Availability

Just recently my in-laws added myself and my husband to their Bay Lake Tower DVC deeds. So we've stayed DVC many times but I've just been exploring ownership.

We wanted to add a day onto our current September reservation. Currently we have a 2 Bedroom, Standard View booked and tried to add an additional night (even though for the first night it's just my husband and I - flight availability). We figured if we could just get the same room, then possibly merge the reservations, we wouldn't' have to check out/check in again. There were no 2 Bedroom Standard Views available when we added the extra night and do have a waitlist. We did book a 1 Bedroom Theme Park view just in case for that night.

My question is - I can see a 2 Bedroom Standard View room available to be booked on the regular Disney.com website with a cash reservation. Do they hold rooms for cash reservations as well as DVC? (Pardon my newbie - ness.) I was going to reach out to Member Services to ask the question about the room I can see, but wanted to know if that's how they just do things. Hoping our waitlist comes through but with the low number of 2 Bedroom Standards, I'm not very hopeful.

Any cash rooms at disneyworld.com come from a different pool of rooms. Most are because a member used points for a Disney Cruise or some other non-DVC hotel reservation.

Cash inventory is separate from DVC inventory. There are a number of ways that a room can be sold to the general public for cash.

Disney owns a small percentage of each DVC resort and can sell rooms represented by that share.

When a member trades their points for a Disney cruise, ABD or for a resort hotel room DVC sells inventory to The Walt Disney Travel Company and uses the money to pay for the cruise, trip or room.

And then there's "breakage" where rooms that have not been reserved by members at 60 days out can be turned over to TWDTC to sell for cash. A small amount of breakage money goes to offset dues and the rest is profit for DVC.

You can call MS to see if they can claw back that one night for you to book using points but it's not always possible.

I will try to see if there is anything they can do. If not, we keep our fingers crossed for the waitlist.

Would they give the room to the Waitlist at the 60 days before they let the room go to TWDTC?

We have a room, so it's not terrible if we don't get the 2 BR. Would just make things easier.

In addition to your wait list search the resort availability tool on the website frequently for the night you want, sometimes inventory appears there that the wait list doesn’t grab.

Oh yes, I've been stalking daily! lol

I did reach out to DVC Member Services to see if they could do anything, but he said no. He told me my waitlist was done far enough in advance that there was a good chance it would come through. So we shall see. I will continue to stalk for the next few months!
