Trying to understand the Rule of Four. I have only been a member since June.

My use year is June. I had 76 points remaining from 2013, which I banked earlier today because I needed to do it before January 31st, 2014.

From Feb. 1 to May 31, can I not book any DVC reservations? I'm confused on this part.

We are second owners on our contract, so I know we are not eligible to use points on cruises or NY hotels; only the WDW resorts, Grand Californian, Hawaii, Vero Beach and Hilton Head.

If I decide to book at a WDW villa in May, can I still do that in my 9-12 month window?

I'm new too only 2 dvc trips, but from what I understand it doesn't matter when you book its the date of check in that determines points that will be used. You can schedule a reservation between Feb - May that would take place in June or after to use your June 2014 points or banked 2013 points. you do not need to wait till june to schedule your next trip but you can only book home resort 11 months before check in. All other resorts you need to wait till 7 months.

ok that's interesting. I'm in the process of buying my DVC ( offer accepte, waiting for ROFR ).

My UY will be december but we often go in vacation in June. That mean 11 months before I can make a reservation even if at the moment of the reservation I have 0 pts ( since I will get said pts later in December for that trip ) ?

If you want to book a trip during the same UY you are in, you must have points available OR borrow points from the next year. If you already banked your points, you don't have any current year points to use. So you have to borrow from the next year's points.

So, with a June UY, and a May trip, you would be using your points during the last month of the UY. You can book a trip in May for that same month, but if you had already banked the rest of the current year points, you would need to borrow from the next UY to go. And if you had to cancel the trip at the last minute, those borrowed points would expire at the end of May. Just one danger of using points during the last month of the UY. And if you didn't bank the points, you would need to use them anyway or they would expire on May 31. So you would need a May trip to use them (or Feb, Mar, April).

The rule of four only applies to points used for non-DVC trips (non-RCI trips as well).

If you want to book at trip for the next UY, you just need to have the points in that UY or be able to borrow them from the next UY.
