New Disney princess outrage: Is 'Frozen' only for 'pretty' girls?

OK, I may be nuts but I think there is something kinda appealing about Ursula. Her face is made to be ugly...but I think an animator could do something with her general shape (and cleavage) and make it attractive. Oh...another character comes to mind...Tiana's buddy Charlotte wasn't exactly thin. Of course, Charlotte wasn't exactly shown in a positive light either. Was it a coincidence that Charlotte was spoiled and chubby? Of course a princess with Ursula's shape would be a huge FLOP! Perhaps it would be best for positive supporting characters to take on some girth.

You think Charlotte is chubby? Not at all! Charlotte waist might not be as tiny as the princesses, but in no way is she chubby.

She also wasnt shown in a negative way? In fact I think that the way she gives up her dream of being a princess so her best friend can be in love and happy is really great. I don't think that Charlotte is supposed to be seen as the spoiled best friend at all, she really is a great side character.

As for Frozen, I have no issue with princesses being pretty. I think an obvious attempt to make a princess who isnt pretty is almost offensive to those who arent like princesses. I am not stick thin and I don't feel like disney is obligated to make a princess who looks like me to relate to her. I'm whiter than a ghost yet the princess I relate the most to is Tiana because she is a hard worker and would put her dreams and job before going out with friends. I love all the princesses, and never have I felt bad growing up, now 20, that I wasn't thin and beautiful like the princesses. Their personalities were absolutely always what I fell in love with.

The next Disney princess film, 'Frozen,' will debut Nov. 27. But an animator has caused a small revolt online by saying of the lead female characters: 'you have to keep them pretty.'

And the outrage is what, exactly? Please, anyone, tell me which of the princesses aren't already beautiful and perfect?

:thumbsup2

And I'll bet you had parents that planted the seed and then encouraged this type of confident positive thinking. That is where it really matters, not in the exact dimensions of a cartoon character. Well said.

Ummmm.... since when is it news that our culture, society and media (film, print, TV, fashion etc) have long preferred depictions of beauty and reward attractiveness? It is not like Disney is the first to run with this idea :confused3

High fashion models are almost as much of a caricature as a cartoon. Even people who are considered beautiful are still airbrushed and photo shopped into this unrealistic perfect appearance that most mere mortals cannot achieve. Check out the slideshow which shows before and after tweaking of celebrities... since even they are not pretty enough to satisfy our appetite for perfection.

Trust me, I'm the last person that should call somebody chubby. I must have mis-remembered Charlotte.

I agree with PP that the article is talking about keeping them "pretty" as opposed to having them express emotions like what Oprah calls "the ugly cry", not that he was saying that all Disney girls have to look like models.

Interestingly enough, when I was a little girl watching Cinderella, I thought the "ugly" in "Ugly Stepsisters" referred to their ugly personalities. In all fairness, my 4 year old self did not rationalize it this way...I just thought that being ugly was their curse for being mean, and Cinderella was pretty because she was nice.

Yes yes our society is obsessed with beauty, and I am too, I'll admit it.

I do wonder if this comment was made out to be more than it actually is. I mean, I use the word "pretty" all the time, but not to mean beautiful or thin, or ideal looking. But also to mean clean, nice, the way I want, etc etc.

I talk about form when I work out as "pretty" ... I just mean that its following the model form.

So yea, keep it pretty ... can mean many things.

You're right--the human leading men and the leading ladies are often perfect-looking. Even the cars are pretty and handsome. :) Only the sidekicks and side characters are less-than-perfect looking.

Wait, Frozen is a Princess movie?? I thought it was about a snowman and a moose! Why would they produce misleading trailers? Perhaps a movie to scratch off the must-see list with my son.
that wasn't the official trailer, it was just a teaser. The snowman and reindeer still have major parts in the film as far as I understand.

:joker:I don't care about the princess movies...my two favorites are Monsters Inc and The Nightmare Before Christmas...I want more of those movies. :)
