New Childseat Laws In New York State Go In Effect Today

New laws as of today. Children up to age 6 have to be in a booster seat. The old law stated only children up to age 3 had to be in a safety seat. Also anyone under the age of 16 years old has to be in a seatbelt in the backseat. The old law stated anyone under 10 years old.

Having driven on the LIE and NYC and a few other places in NY, I think this is a wonderful law. Now, if NY would keep the people off cell phones while driving and teach drivers that the left lane is for passing other cars, not time, not gas, not anything else, it might be nice to drive there.

Does this mean she can be out of a regular car seat and into a booster seat at age 3 or age 4? I have no problem with putting her in a booster, but she is already having trouble fitting into her car seat (she is tall and sturdy). We also live on LI, NY.

I have seen boosters that can go up to 80 lbs. The one I had was good to 70 lbs and looked like a little seat so my big boys fit.

I am not confused about what booster she needs that will fit her, as she is still in a carseat. I just want to know how long she legally needs to be in a carseat before I can put her in a booster.

Children age 3, and under have to be in a child safety seat. Children age 4,5, and 6 have to be in a child safety seat or booster. We have taken our 6 year old son out of his booster seat. Now we have to go buy a new one for the year. He is pretty happy about it. He likes to sit up higher. And it is safer.
