New Canon lenses

Anyone else disappointed by the new lenses announced by Canon? To me, it seems as though as interesting as the 24 and 28mm f2.8 lenses are, they may not be worth the price of $800+. What is so important about having IS on lenses with this short a focal length? Only time will tell if these are worth a buy. As for the "new" 24-70f2.8L? What has really changed? No IS. WHY??? It looks to me that they are getting an extra $1000 (retail price of around $2300) because they printed a "II" on it. C'mon.

What is so important about having IS on lenses with this short a focal length?

I would have to guess video work. Wide angle lenses are often being used in DLSR video production. So IS would help in stabilizing the video when the camera is being held.

While those in the Canon camp may be unhappy, those in the Pentax camp are very happy with the direction of the new Pentax Ricoh. Back in October, there was much consternation about the future of Pentax. Since then, they have finally announced their first mirrorless camera, issued a lens roadmap, introduced three new P & S', tethering for the 645, and introduced new lenses for all there of their mounts, Q, K-01, 645 and K. There is even a new rather large telephoto lens! Going from dead to this point is making us all very, very happy!! Thank you Ricoh!!!

I don't know if I'm disappointed, but I'm not really excited. The two wide lenses didn't really excite me much. I already have six lenses in that focal range, so a couple of not very fast primes isn't interesting to me.

I'm glad that they finally announced the new 24-70mm. I've been getting tired of all of the rumors about it. I've got an older one and am probably going to sell it. It's a nice lens, but it is one of our least used. My wife prefers the 24-105 f/4 for the extra reach and feels that the IS is sufficient compensation for the loss of a stop. It's also much lighter than the old 24-70. I use either the 24-105 when I want a simple walk-around lens and primes when I don't. I don't think that we've used the old 24-70 in over a year.

I'm tired of these brutal price jumps. The old 24-70mm was selling for $1,300. The new one is selling for $2,300. That's a pretty steep jump. I know that Japanese manufacturers are getting killed by the yen/dollar ratio, but something has to give. They've got to either offshore that work or do something creative. The way that high end lens prices have been going up, you are going to start losing a lot of sales.

I've got an older one and am probably going to sell it.

This is what I am hoping for that others will do as well. I would be happy to have one of the older ones!

I was quite surprised to see no IS on the new 24-70. That, combined with the larger filter size means I'll try and pick up a used Mark I that an upgrader is getting rid of. The 2 primes are equally as baffling, I assume they have to be geared towards a video audience as Shutterbug said as they're so close in range and they did get the IS.

Is on the short primes... I can see the benefits. While it won't sway me to get one, I know many people who love thier IS lenses and will jump on it. I imagine a lot of people were asking why when Canon came out with the 18-55 IS as well and now no one thinks twice about it.
