I have a Canon Rebel T3 and only have the lens that came with the camera. I looking to upgrade mainly to have more zoom. What would be my next step. I am purely an amateur mainly shooting family and vacations. Love the speed and the crispness of pics from my Rebel.
Advice needed:)
Thanks!

I really like my Canon 55-250mm. It's basically another kit level lens, but it's inexpensive and has good performance (especially for the price). There are many, many other options out there though, and I'm sure some others will be along shortly to toss their 2 cents in :).

I do know a 70-300 gets talked up here a lot, not sure if it's Canon or some 3rd party brand.

So you have the 18-55mm lens??? And do any of those family photos involve sports??? Just asking the sports question, because that'll help with suggestions you might receive.

Yes that is the lens I have. And no major sports.

The Canon 55-250 does pair nicely with the 18-55 and it's more affordable. Some prefer not to change lenses and go with an all in one like an 18-200, the drawback is those cost more are a little slower and generally are not as sharp. I went older with my tele zoom and got a used 70-210 f/4 (goes for $150 from KEH) but the drawback for some is that is has no IS and is an old style push pull zoom, though it has near L quality optics.

We can make recs all day, but you have to figure out which one is right for you.

Where did you get the 55-250 for $150 with IS? I just ordered one, picking it up tomorrow!!!! The lowest price I found was $220. :( Oh well, can't wait to try it out next spring on our trip!

If you can I would suggest that you invest in the canon 24-105 4.0L. On a crop frame like your T3 it will be more like a 38-168mm.

I shoot with an old 28-105 on my crop body. It's a great focal length for a walkaround lens but it doesn't come close to eliminating the need for a tele-zoom for me. But it all comes down to individual needs.

How much money do you want to spend? Budget? The perfect family/vacation walkaround would be a Tamron 18-270 VC PZD. The Canon 18-135 is decent as well. It really depends on whether you want that one lens to do everything, or do you want to switch lenses and how much you want to spend.
