new blog up: Kevin's review of Flying Fish Cafe

The risotto looks awful. I'm glad it tasted better than it looked.

I remember when this restaurant used to go through a variety of chefs. I first ate there in 1997, pretty close after they opened. The potato-wrapped red snapper was slightly different, as you did feel there were thin potato slices wrapped and fried around the fish, and it was excellent. (I remember the sauce was the best part, too.)

A few years later, my friend ordered a scallop entree. She was served 3 scallops. Yes, 3. We were not impressed and the red snapper was off the menu at that time, too. Whoever the chef was who messed around with the menu must not have lasted long.

The chef there now, Tim Keating, is fabulous. As is their "pastry goddess extraordinaire", as you can tell by the desserts. I went to a food and wine pairing dinner there this past October, and I was impressed by everything they served us. I would not hesitate to book another this year if it's offered again when I'm there.

Because it's been quite a few years since I've been there for a regular meal and not a dining event, I want to return again. I have been known to order appetizers and dessert for dinner, so this seems right up my alley.

Thanks for the review Kevin. :thumbsup2

DH & I have been to FF a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The last time was summer of 2008- and the snapper still had an actual potato wrapper. Sorry to hear that has changed.

We like the atmosphere at FF and agree that appetizers and desserts are terrific. In fact, we also have enjoyed many a meal of just those 2 courses!

Thanks for the review Kevin. I enjoyed reading it - as usual for all your reviews.

Val & I ate there along with John & Christy Stangler in early October and enjoyed our meal. I wouldn't rate it as good as YSH (our favorite) or Citrico's but it was a good meal.

As I was reading this review, I was almost certain that I had read it somewhere else in the past....

It was then I noticed the date it was posted.

Color me confused.

It never ceases to amaze me to find old posts bumped to the front page, especially by those with an extremely low post count.

I think what happens is that a new person to the boards does a search for something, decides to reply to a thread that came up in the search and doesn't notice the date of the thread. I've done it myself, started to post a reply and then realized the date on the thread is weeks or months ago.
