DH and I are retiring this year - 33 years each in the classroom.
As a gift to ourselves we have decided to get APs. Our oldest DD and her husband moved to Northeast Orlando last summer.

How can we buy APs and book packages (and deals) in advance of arrival?

You can buy APs on WDW's website. Same as booking packages.

If we buy them in advance do they start the day we first arrive? Don’t want to waste days.

Yes even if you buy ahead of time (so you can book fastpass), you activate them when you arrive so that will be start date

What a marvelous idea to get APs!

Yes, you can purchase your APs and packages on line. You will get a voucher for the AP which you can use to get AP deals. When you head to Disney take the voucher and IDs to any ticket window or guest service window and exchange for your AP cards.

I hope your DD is ready for a number of extended visits once you get your APs!

If you have AAA, you may be able to buy the AP at a discount. That's what I did the year before last. I used the AP to get a discount for the room and activated it at guest services on my first park day (EPCOT).
