I just got a very sad phone call. My sister called me to tell me a woman who was our next door neighbor our entire childhood, has 6 months to live. Pancreatic Cancer. I am devasted. She still lives next door to what was my dad's house. Since dad died, it is his wife's house now.

Her DD was my best friend growing up. She was a year older than me, and we did everything together. Madeline (my neighbor who is dying) was a single mom to 4 kids. Kathy(my friend) was her youngest. I was one of 12 kids. We had no money for extra's. When Madeline would take Kathy to the movie's, she would want me to come. Kathy wanted a friend to go with her everywhere, so I did a bunch of stuff I never would of gotten to do if it weren't for them inviting me along. If my mom said no (probably because she had no money) Madeline would go over and talk her into it. Madeline more than likely paid my way for almost everything I did with them. I spent weekend's at her grandfather's house near the beach, that was the best time! I had no grandparent's, so I loved her's like my own.

When I got older, it occured to me how tough it must of been to pay for me to do things all the time. I found out she got no support from her husband, and her career was a bus driver. She could not of made much money. After my mom died almost 11 years ago, I really wanted to send Madeline a letter, telling her how much it meant to me, being a part of their family. My dad was a drunk, and being Kathy's friend, I had a safe haven, that my siblings did not have. Most of my "happy" childhood memories are of the time I spent with her and Kathy. I never did write the letter. I would put it off, and put it off, until eventually, I didn't even think about it anymore.

Looks like writing that letter is a priority now. PLEASE, if someone means something to you, let them know it. They may not be around to hear it later. :guilty:

I'm sorry.

That is very good advice.

Write the letter. You never know who we will lose. I get busy and forget to email my best friend. Always let those you love know it! :grouphug:

I'm sorry that you're going through this. ((((hugs)))) and I agree, that is good advice.

Very sad news about your friend. I think it's a good idea to write the letter. Doesn't matter if it's a little late. Let her know how much she means to you.

Thank you for the alway important message.

I keep meaning to send a thank you letter to a teacher that influenced my life and never sat down to write it. This year is the year-I'll send it with a christmas card.

I agree.

I had a fabulous church youth choir director. I always wanted to have a youth choir reunion, but I live far away and hoped someone who still lived in town would organize a reunion. Well, several years ago, our terrific director dropped dead (at adult choir practice, no less). He was only in his early 60s. I thought I had all kinds of time to get that reunion underway. Not.
