I am wanting to take my wife and kids to disney this year. Neither of us have ever been and need some basic information about it.I was wondering the best time of year to go when it is not to crowed. We have 9 and 12 year old daughters and was wondering what are the best attractions and shows for them to enjoy. I am grateful for any help.

Your best bet would be to get a Passporter. www.passporter.com
The book shows all the resorts, parks, restaurants etc. It will tell you when is the best time to go both crowd and $$ wise. Honestly there is so much to learn that you would get totally overwhelmed quickly on info. At least with the Passporter it's right there in front of you and you can look up the answer.
A few things you need to work out right away are:
Where to stay? onsite or off
How long to go for?
Do you want to take the kids out of school?
Do you have a budget amount?
You pretty much go from there
Good luck!

I recently purchased the Unoffical Guide to Disney World. That's a really good book if you're interested. Also, there's books geared to Traveling with Kids which talks more about what kinds of things the kids will enjoy more.

If you come to this site often, you will learn a lot that way too. Reading some trip reports is a good way to get peoples perspectives on things.

Hope all goes well with planning your trip! You'll have a great time!

I think the Passporter is good for helping you plan and the Unofficial Guide is great for research and deciding what you want to plan in your vacation. I'd also go over mousesavers.com and allears throughly. Then you can gain a ton of available information by lurking on the various boards here--family, resort, restuarant, tips, & budget

Hello! You will have a fabulous time.

Were there any particular times you were thinking about going? Generally speaking, Most of March (especially the second half) and early April are busy because of spring break and school holidays. Summer gets busy and very hot. Depending on where you live the temps may not be an issue. For someone coming from up north, summer seems worse that for someone who lives in the south, KWIM. Thanksgiving week and Christmas/New Years are extremely busy.

We loved our trip in early November for crowds, and February was a good time too, although cooler.

As far as attractions and shows, your possibilities are endless. You will truly find so many things that are amazing and wonderful.

I would highly consider staying onsite. This is JMHO, but it is the only way to go.

HTH!

I, too, think you should start by buying a Passporter and an Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. The latter is my favorite, but they do have different types of info in them as a previous poster said. Please just don't over look the importance of ADR's! This is very very important! I'm so excited for you guys!!!!

You and your family are going to have so much fun! I agree with the other posters about the Unofficial Guide. It is my disney bible! I have also signed up for Tourguide Mike (you have to pay for this site $18.00- $20.00) and he has a lot of good information about least crowed times and really good touring guides and a TON of other information -- for me well worth the money. PLEASE do research before you go -- Advanced reservations, best resorts, dining info, touring plans....it will make your trip go so much smoother! I know so many people who go to disney and just "wing it" and end up not liking it at all! Have a great trip!

I agree with the book suggestions but to answer some of your questions you can look here for historical attendance levels at the parks which should help you decide when you want to go. We find the fall after school starts to be a really good time to go when the crowd levels are low and the weather is nice. The first two wks of December are also a great time to go - you can enjoy the Christmas decor before the parks get really crowded.

We have taken our neices and nephew when they were your kids ages and they enjoyed just about everything we did. This is where the books previously mentioned will really help you. We found the touring plans to be very useful in getting the most out of our days there. They have plans that are geared towards everyone from families with small children to just adults so you should be able to find something that works for your family. If you read through the info about the rides in either book you can decide how to customize the plans to your liking. This worked for us. hth.

How are the crowds in march??

Depends... Once spring breakers get there it can get really crowded. I also think late April to May (before Memorial Day weekend) is a great time to go. I highly reccomend the passporter also!! Love it. And I agree with the earlier poster who reccommended staying on site- it's so convenient to take Disney transportation everywhere. No matter what though- It's Disney World, and you're bound to have a wonderful time!!

ALthough I've never used passporter, the Unofficial book is really good as are these boards..You will get an answer for anything you can think of to ask here. On the flip side of the coin, we have stayed on site and personally for us we don't mind staying offsite. It can be just as convenient although you would need to rent a car ( which we prefer over disney transportation any day.) That makes it way more convenient if you want to go offsite for meals, other attractions, shopping, etc...There are some great deals to be had if you spend the time looking.. If money is an issue, you may want to consider this. We personally are park rats (we don't spend much time at all at the hotel) and really can't see the logic of spending $200-300 a night on a hotel (of course our hotel is free but even if we had to pay we'd still stay offsite just for the cost alone.). But if thats your preference, the Disney hotels ARE nice. Just research all you can and then once you have all your info, sit down and come up with a game plan. I agree with another poster that you don't want to "wing" it. As far as attractions for your kids, I would try to let them experience as much as they can and come up with their own dislikes and likes. I think all the rides/shows are great for any age (with a very few exceptions.) thats what makes WDW a truly family destination.!! Have fun planning!!!!

p.s. I know the library should at least have the Unofficial guide, if yours doesn't have the most current edition, then have them check other branches, but honestly if you can get a fairly current one (04-05) MOST of the info is the basically the same (and actually some of the info is exactly verbatim from older (1999-03) versions.

Have you order the Disney Planning DVD yet? If not go to www.disney.go.com and request one. it will get you ready to go!
There are alot of guidebooks, My fav. so far is the Unofficial guide although I am looking into Tour Guide Mikes (online) this year as well as passporters just to try something new.
We have been at different times of year and Late April, was great! Low crowds, great weather. Next fav time was last week of Oct. Still great weather, and low crowds EXCEPT for going to "Mickey's not so scarey Halloween party". That I will not do again.
I will never again stay off property if I can help it. Take advantage of the transportation offered by Disney when staying in the resorts. We love never having to worry about anything once we arrive!
If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me and I will be happy to answer what I can.
Best advice I can give you...Your already here...these people on the dis are great and will answer most everything!
PLAN ~ GO ~ AND HAVE A GREAT TIME!!

HELLO EVERYONE,
MY DH WANTED ME TO COME ON HERE TO SAY THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE EVERYONE HAS GIVEN US TO PLAN OUR DISNEY TRIP.WE WILL PROBABLY GO IN OCTOBER,WHICH IS MY B-DAY ( 10-15-1971) AND MY YOUNGEST DD B-DAY( 10-16-1996) WHAT DO THEY DO FOR B-DAYS??.I AM GOING TO PURCHASE A GUIDE BOOK AND A PASSPORTER.MY DH'S BOSS HAS A CONDO NEAR DINSEY WORLD AND WE WILL PROBABLY STAY THERE.

I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE MY GIRLS FACES WHEN WE GO.I THINK THAT'S WHAT I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO AND OF COURSE ALL OF US HAVING A GOOD OL TIME..MY DH AND I NEVER BEEN BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DOING THINGS WITH THE GIRLS MY DH IS DEFINTELY A BIG KID AS WELL( )

I know there is a birthday button or somthing, but I have never been able to go on my birthday. Hopefully someone else can give you the specifics on that!! Happy planning!

Go to your local library and check out the guide books they have to see which one(s) you like best. The Unofficial Guide is probably the most comprehensive (and dullest read). Search this site for any questions you may have. Go to the other sites mentioned. Also check out TheMouseForLess.com. Ask any questions you may have. You will get lots of info and lots of differing opinions.

Have fun planning.

When you go in MK on your b-day make a point to go get your free birthday button...Then through out the day other Disers have said they recieved free desserts, birthday cards from characters, etc. You will love it in October, (my b-day too). If you end up staying at one of the Disney resort make sure to tell the front desk. Friends of ours mentioned their DD's b-day, and they asked her who her fav. charater was...When they came back to the room she had a Balloon, cupcake, and b-day card signed by Cinderella.

We went last September and everyone there told us it was the best time of the year to go. Weather was awesome and there were no crowds. AT MK, we didn't stand in ANY line longer than 5 minutes. We were ok with the kids missing a couple days of school. It's Disneyworld! And it was our first trip there. October should be a great time too. Still warm and smaller crowds...make sure you have travel insurance. We did because of the hurricanes. We went after Katrina had already passed through. Your girls will love it. It will be a truly magical time! Enjoy!

Oh....the Birthday, almost forgot. Our daughter turned 7 while we were at MK, she got a button that morning at MK. Everyone said Happy Birthday to her all day. At Crystal Palace they had Pooh, Piglet, and Eyeore come sing happy birthday to her and they danced around the table with her. After breakfast we were the first ones to enter the park, so went to wake up Tinkerbell. She received a certificate marking the occasion. It was so sweet. When we got back to our room that night, the AKL had a dessert waiting for her in our room.

Most likely it will be october that we will go because my DH will have a paid vacation time from his job to take.It is my yougest dd and I's b-day to make it more fun, october will likely be the lucky month to go.Can you pick which disney character you want for your b-day??It will also give us time to get things oraganize for the trip.My DH wants us to stay for as least a week or betta.I am just funny about keeping the girls out of school for that long period of time. They both make wonderful grades so i guess it won't hurt them. That's another reason why we won't to take them,They both make us very proud with grades at school (A'S & B'S) so we want to do somthing to reward them.

When you book your reservation for your meal that day, look at who will be there at that restaurant. Our daughter had breakfast with Pooh, but LOVES Mickey, so we went to a place that he would be at as well. We also took her to Chef Mickey's the next day for breakfast. We took her to Crystal Palace for her birthday because we wanted to be in the park early so she could get to "Wake Up Tink". It just depends on which character you are looking for. My daughters aren't into the Princess thing, that made our boys happy! So, we went with the classics, Mickey, Goofy, Pooh & Friends.
