hey everyone, my husband is looking for a job and he applied to one in reno, and it seems like it's looking promising. i was wondering if anyone knew some good neighborhoods close to reno but not right smack in the middle of it. something that's still close to shopping and grocery stores, restaurants, and has a low crime rate, and prefereably someplace that's affordable for young married couples. thanks everyone, i'd really appreciate the info :)

bump up, what about sparks? is that a decent area? i'm still looking for suggestions :)

I've been there a few times, but don't know a whole lot about the area. My brother recently moved there and bought a starter house in the West Reno area. It's very close to lots of shopping, and easy access to the freeway. From driving around, it seems like Reno's got lots of new neighborhoods and shopping centers popping up all over. Definitely an up & coming city with lots of recreational opportunities nearby.

one option you might consider is instead of immediatly looking to move into a house-doing a short term rental in a furnished apartment.

there are quite a few complexes in reno that offer 3-6 month furnished (down to the pots, pans and dishes) places at pretty good rates. they have them because several corporations send people for temp stints in the area.

by doing this you could get a feel for the area and decide which part of reno or sparks you like. there are also outlying areas not in reno proper that are still decent commutes.

you might want to talk with a local realtor about what's happening with the market there right now. the prices went up pretty high (by that region of nevada's standards) pretty quickly (driven by allot of retirees from california), but i hear the market crash has hit them pretty hard as well. i know that the apartments one of my relatives lives in that was in the midst of doing a condo conversion with major remodeling cancelled plans to do a large number of the remaining buildings because there are just no potential buyers (before the market crashed the places would have been sold before construction began).

I would look into Galena. It seems very nice. There is a shopping area called The Summit
that has a ton of great stores and a movie theater (that my friends and I go to often). Getting into Reno, including downtown, is extremely easy.
Good Luck!

thank you everyone for the input :) we really appreciate it! the job offer is still looking good, now it's just down to prayer that the hiring manager likes his resume!:cool1:

I am always an advocate of renting for a while, learn the layout of town, good school districts and where the good neighborhoods are. Then when you buy, you'll be making an educated decision.

Plus, with a new job, you aren't wrapped into a mortgage if it wasn't what it was cracked up to be...
