We have been dealing with a difficult pup as previous posts have been about. He is a welsh corgi, now nine months old, with what seems to be fear based aggression do to his mistreatment in a puppy mill where he wasn't adopted until he was nearly six months old. Thanks to some very good advice and excellent trainers we have made some wonderful progress. This past week has been nearly problem free and we have seen our pup return to his old loving, happy, playful self.
Today, however he is getting neutered. This could help the problem even more, however I have read that with fearful pups it can cause set-backs. He will be coming home with pain medicine. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to handle him post-op. If I could have delayed this a month I would have, however we have changed the appointment twice because of an eye and resp. infection.
I am also concerned because we live on a second floor condo. I am really nervous about picking him up to carry him down the steps if he's in pain and out of sorts, given his history. How long do you think until he can manage the steps alone?

Our lab was fine the day after neutering. We were not offered pain medication for him. No jumping and leash walk for a week. He’ll do fine. Yes you might want to be extra careful when you lift him to take him down stairs. Ask the vet if they can show you how to lift him to minimize his discomfort. He’ll definitely be groggy on the first day so just make sure he can’t fall down stairs. I would think he could do the stairs after a few days bu the vet should be able to tell you.

Just don't change your routine! Treat him the same as you've been treating him all alone, and don't act as if you're feeling sorry for him.

Just be aware that he may be slower and sleepier for a few days.

I wouldn't plan to carry him around, if you don't normally - only pick him up if he seems to be having difficulty.

The sooner you get back to a normal routine, the happier he'll be.

I sure am hoping that I don't have to lift him more then tonight and tomorrow . My son will be home then and he can do it. We just have a very long set of stairs. He's never been a wimpy dog so unless it will disturb his stitches I will have him doing the steps.
Good tip on not changing the way we handle him. We have made amazing progress in the past week and I really don't want to undo it at all.
