Negotiating with owners?

I'm surprised how different prices can be for the same townhouse in the same development. Furnishings aren't THAT different (in some cases, higher priced units have old box tvs). Do you "bargain" with homeowers, or just move on?

Thanks,

Kathleen

I usually just ask if their price is negotiable. I have an advantage as we usually stay for 4 weeks and if the place is not rented yet, they usually will negotiate a little on the price. If they wont budge on the price I move on.
I never accept their posted rate.

Owners are people so it's like everything else when dealing with people- different depending on the person. We go in the low season and I usually have my eyes on several properties, and do ask if any of them offer any last minute discounts.

I never bargain with the owners. If someone else has a house/townhouse with a lower price in the same development and it has similar amenities, then why not rent from the owner that advertises with a lower price? I set a price point that I am willing to pay and I am sure owners have a price point that they want to rent their unit for.

My only warning is you pay for what you get. If you simply go with the absolute cheapest rental you could arrive at the resort to find no electricity in the place or various amenties not working. The owner may not have paid their association fees making the facilities of the resort unavailable to you. Key mitigation for this is do plenty of research if lots of good reviews on variious sites and forums like this one from genuine posters (i.e. users with a large number of posts over many years) then probably is just a good deal. You'll find good deals at Windsor Hills on here:

I always ask if the price is negotiable BUT I always travel in the off season. The offered price has always been lower.

My modo -- if you do not ask then you answered yourself. If you ask you have lost nothing but possibly gained...Extra money for Extras! maybe even more days.

I agree with this. If there was an extra day or two on either side of my dates. I'd ask the owner if those days could be thrown in. It's always been a yes. I've even gotten a 4 bedroom at Encantada for 9 days for $523. That was 4 years ago though. Anyway, I don't hassle the owners but I do ask if the price is flexible.
