My Dh and my Dad (along with a few others) are headed to Ontario next month on a fishing trip (Deep Creek). They are asking me questions I'm not having much luck answering - thought I would check with you guys for some help.

They have already gotten their passports - so we were ahead of the game there - for some reason their questions revolve around how much beer and tobacco they can bring with them across the border - then how much it's going to cost them when they run out!:drinking1 I'm actually wondering how much fishing they plan to do?! Any certain stores to look for and to stay away from for their purchases? (I do expect some sort of souvenier!)

So... we'd love to hear any tips you might have about crossing the border - I heard about a "sin" tax - is it really 400%? Any help for the novice travelers would be appreciated!

Hi! I hope they have a great time. I had a look around, and couldn't find any info about how much alcohol and tabacco they can bring IN to the country. They can call this # and ask: (506) 636-5064

You can only buy alcohol at bars and The Beer Store and the LCBO (liquor control board of ontario) and some grocery stores have a wine store inside. I don't really drink so don't know how much stuff costs but I betcha it's more then they are used to paying in your neck of the woods. I don't know about a sin tax except that they keep increasing the price of cigarettes to deter smokers/ pay for the healthcare costs. If they can buy cigarettes on a native reserve (don't know if there is one near Deep Creek) they will be cheaper but stronger.

Not sure if that was any help at all!

Here's a list of how much alcohol and tobacco you can bring with you across the border:

I have no idea how much cigarettes cost in Ontario (I'm not a smoker) but they're taxed heavily, so it's safe to assume that it will be more than what you're paying in the States. If they want cheap smokes, find the nearest Indian reservation. They sell cigarettes in large Ziploc bags!

With regards to alcohol, the previous poster was correct. You buy wine and spirits at the LCBO, and you should be able to look up items and prices on their web site - http://www.lcbo.com/main/en.shtml The LCBO also has a limited selection of beer. But beer you mostly buy at the creatively named Beer Store. You should be able to find their nearest Beer Store (and what brands are available at that store) on their web site - http://www.thebeerstore.ca/storesandproducts-index.html

Sounds like we don't need to worry too much about the fish in that area! ;)

I appreciate the two of you taking your time to post an answer for me. After going back and reading my post - they do sound like lushes!! Actually neither one smoke - they were just wondering how the costs compare.

You're right - the fish have NOTHING to worry about!

Thanks again!

Sin tax of 400% :confused3

Never heard of that before.

I'm neither a drinker nor a smoker, so I can't help much with those questions.

Another place to post your questions might be on the Canadian board.

Lots of helpful folks over there:)

Got to Canadas Wonderland its a theme park there. very beautiful. ;)

Tell them to buy Beer up here! We store it all at large orange stores marked "The Beer Store" in large letters. Super easy to find!

Seriously though go here: http://www.thebeerstore.ca/Beers/brandsearch.asp

Click on Premium, value, imported and then click on the Beer, then click Price list. It will give you a whole list broken down by can vs bottle and size.

Thanks for the new posts! I'll definitely check out that link when I get home - (it's blocked here at work!) I appreciate the info and will pass it along to my alkies - I mean my Dad and my DH!

My sister buys her cigarettes etc on the Native reserves she pays 10 bucks for a carton. I dont know if Deep creek is near a reserve but if it is, thats the way to go.
