DH & I have decided to start trying to have a baby when we return from our trip to WDW in October. I have been thinking that it might be fun to "bring home a souvenier" as someone had previously mentioned to me on these boards. I am currently on the pill and I know i would have to stop it before we even think of trying. I had planned on really enjoying this vacation, resort hopping, drinking and pretty much just enjoying the parks and rides...would it be too risky to try to get pregnant while away? should i just wait until we get home? just looking for your opinions...Thanks :)

Well, from someone who has been "trying" for almost a year now, don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen on the first try! There are so many things that have to be in perfect order when the egg is released!
Anyway, you can definitly try on your trip and don't worry about drinking, etc. etc. Sometimes, thats when it is most likely to happen! :teeth:
You wouldn't be sharing anything with your baby until a few weeks after you were pregnant anyways.
Good luck with your little Souvenier!

You can enjoy any of these things will TTC. I recommend getting "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. Read it before TTC. Good luck!

...don't worry. I had multiple miscarriages before having my son (now age 7). The one time I did get pregnant and carry to term was the time I did everything "wrong" in the beginning. I drank 3 or 4 glasses of wine one evening at a romantic dinner with my hubby, not knowing that I was already pregnant. I wasn't taking any vitamins, much less prenatal ones before "trying" and wasn't really taking care of myself (working too much and eating too many bad foods...especially chocolate chip cookies)!

Well, sure enough, about 3 weeks after that romantic dinner, it dawned on me that I hadn't had my period in a while....nearly 2 1/2 months to be exact. I typically don't worry much about that since I'm very irregular. But, I noticed that I was feeling sick a lot during the day so I took a pregnancy test and, sure enough, I was pregnant. I went to the OBGYN and found out I was already about 2 months along and was worried sick about the wine, no vitamins and eating poorly. My OB chuckled and said...don't worry...your hormones are fine...I think this one is gonna take! Just starting taking care of yourself now.

Needless to say, my DS is fine! My husband and I laugh to this day that it was either the wine or chocolate chip cookies that did the trick.

I agree with all of the above, especially the part about the possibility it might not happen the first time. Don't stress out, and have fun trying!

One thing to add, please make sure you are taking a daily multi-vitamin with Folic Acid. I am not sure of the proper dosage (I think it's 400 mg), but it has been shown to help prevent birth defects, and needs to be taken before and right when you get PG for maximum effectiveness.

Good luck!

Thank you for all of your advice...I was thinking of maybe stopping the pill about 2 months before my trip...everyone keep your fingers crossed!

the chances of alcohol affecting the fetus before implantation is virtually nill. Go ahead but watch it when you get back in case you were successful.

I am on my 4th pregnancy - 2 beautiful DD's, 1 miscarriage, and 1 that is 4 months along... I never made it more than a month after quitting the pill - 3 out of 4 took two weeks or less including the two in my mid-30's. Just wanted you to know that while it most definitely can take awhile, sometimes it doesn't so be sure you're ready! And take the folic acid! Good luck and enjoy your trip! :wizard:

you should start taking folic acid now as it is so very important in the stop of birth defects, you should be on it for a month b4 you start trying, you can get that and even prenatal vit right over the counter, ask your pharmacist if you are unsure. that being said as soon as i had the one month of folic in my system for a month i went off the pill, and dh and i went away for one last hurrah weekend. we drank, we ate, we drank some more, got a little (well a lot) frisky and yep you know it, i was a fertile mertile, 2 weeks off the pill and bang (oops that is bad) i was pg with ds. they say it can sometimes take a bit of time to get pg after being on the pill but, nope not here. so start your vits, time it how you want but, know that you might be pg b4 your trip if you go off the pill quite a bit b4 you go, so pay attention to the signs or even take a pg test to be safe. oh and best of all congrats on being ready to take this next step in your life.............have a fun time too, lol!!

Not to burst your bubble, but I want you to be aware of fertility facts because seeing a negative on a stick can be heartbreaking.

You are only fertile for about 12-24 hours in a single month. That means that you have to know when you are ovulating and have sex before the egg is released (ideally, sperm should be waiting on the egg). So the chances of you ovulating while on vacation aren't great.

Now let's say you time it right, you still only have a 25% chance each month of ending up pregnant.

If you know that you'd like to start trying in October, I'd start taking a pre-natal today, go off the pill in July or August and consider charting (see fertilityfriend.com or read the TCOYF book mentioned above). You can use condoms to avoid conception, but being off the pill a few months will give your body time to adjust. When I went off the pill, it took about 6 months for my cycle to regulate. I still could have gotten pregnant, but had a hard time pin-pointing ovulation.

GL!

Vettechick99 has some very good advice. I am also going to chime in on the folic acid. Do it the moment you even consider it might be time to try.

ditto on the folic acid! Ideally women of childbearing age who may become pregnant should be taking a minimum 800 mcg, which is the amount found in most OTC prenatal vitamins. Once you are pregnant you should really be taking 1 mg per day. That is what is found in prescription prenatals. It doesn't hurt to be taking that extra 200 mcg when trying too. You could either call your GYN and let them know you plan to start trying and ask them to call you in a prescription for prenatals or you could take an OTC prenatal and a folic acid vitamin supplement.

Best of luck to you! I'm also in the don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen right away group too. We are expecting #3 now. DS #1 took 2 1/2 years of trying with multiple forms of infertility treatment. DS #2 came easier but still required fertility meds. Baby #3 is a complete surprise. I was the model maternity patient with both the boys. No caffeine at all from the time they triggered ovulation, no hot showers, absolutely no drinking, made every effort not to take so much as tylenol. This time, baby concieved after a night out complete with wine, had a problem with a tooth and took heavy duty antibiotics and painkillers for the days untill surgery could be done etc. Fortunately my OB has assured me all of that is fine.

Enjoy your trip and don't hesitate to enjoy a few cocktails while you are there!

My husband and I are going to be TTC in about 6 months too!! :goodvibes A word of caution- I started taking prenatal vitamins a few months ago, and they made me SO sick. I was throwing up every day- people thought I was already pregnant! So, I talked to my Dr. and she said my reg. vitamin (One a Day Women) is fine- has enough folic acid(400 mg),and that I could get prescription prenatals when I actually do get pregnant- so just watch out. I was sick for a month before my mom figured out why I was sick!! :rotfl2:

And GOOD LUCK!!!

Prenatals made me constipated (probably from the added iron). My midwife said I could eat Total cereal every day and get the same benefit. No problem with constipation after that!

Well, I was 3 weeks pregnant on our last trip and didn't know it. It was the food and wine festival. 'nuff said! :teeth:
