One of the attorneys in my office is heavily involved with a project she helped organize called Kidstix. No, they don't send the kids into the woods. They get donations of tickets to different events (sports, performing arts, cultural events) and bring kids from the community who wouldn't normally be able to attend.

I like your idea regarding the allowance - I think I may just do the same thing.
