Need suggestions for selling F350 Dually

We have sold our fifth wheel and now are trying to sell our F350 and are having no luck. We went to Carmax and they were only willing to give us $15,000 . I about fell out of my chair when I saw their appraisal. I've purchased cars from them before and have always received a very good price for my trade-in. Our truck only has 39K miles and for a diesel that is hardly broken in yet.

So my question is - what's a good method to try and sell this. We live in a rural area but I have put the truck on craigslist in the 2 major cities that are nearby but no luck. Haven't received any emails on it which really surprises me. I thought the truck would sell alot easier than the fifth wheel. My fifth wheel sold in 2 days.

I've been trying to locate some good on-line places to list it but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on good sites to try and sell it. Thanks.

I don't know the process for getting an ad listed there, but I typically search on cars.com. The site seems to have a mix of dealer stock and private sales. it's possible they pick up the classified ads from our local paper, so maybe check that out? I don't know what it costs though.

Also, does RVtrader have a section for tow vehicles?

I recently sold my brand new (8K miles) Ram 2500 Diesel. I ended up selling to CarMax after using both Autotrader and Cars.com for over a month with only 1 serious inquiry. I thought it should sell in the low 30's based on NADA, etc. I let it go for 25K and it really hurt but I did get a smile on my face when it sat on their lot for nearly 2 months? My guess is they finally auctioned it off.

Not trying to bust your bubble but there's unfortunately a boat load of these trucks around. A friend of mine had a 2004 F-250 CC Diesel that he bought used in 05 for 33k. Last year he filed bankruptcy. He tried selling it before he filed only to find out he couldn't fetch but around 15k for it and he still owed about 23k. I had a 99 F-250 CC that I bought new and the sticker price at that time was what Ford was getting. They were just in such high demand and they didn't have to sell them for any lower. If you can hang on until things get better I'd say do it. If not you're not going to get what you owe. There's 2 or 3 people I know on this forum that took a heck of a beating on tow vehicles recently and had to pull $$$ from their own pocket to get rid of them. Good luck and I hope you get close to your asking price as you can.

IMO the reason these trucks lost so much value is because people who used them for campers, horse trailers, work and other purposes lost them in the economy and turned a lot of them in. They're like houses. Why buy or build new when you can get one way cheaper used.

How far away is your RV dealer? Maybe they will let you put it on their lot. It may be an incentive for somebody to buy a new 5th wheel if they can get a good deal on a truck at the same time.

Have you tried out of state on Craigslist? It has worked with me on vehicles in the past. Also, Ebay has a $125 selling fee and you can put a reserve on there for $7 per thousand. It might be an option. I put Old Bessie, my golf cart on Ebay, and a local buyer saw it and came and offered cash for it and picked it up to end the auction early. It might be an option for you. A big truck and an antique golf cart are two entirely different things, but stranger things happen.

Hadn't thought about there being alot of these trucks on the market because of people selling their campers due to the economy. I thought that once I sold the 5er, the truck would be a piece of cake to get rid of. Honestly, I was totally shocked to sell the 5er so quick but I guess it was just the right person at the right time. I have one person looking at the truck now and if it doesn't pan out, I might just hold off for awhile and relist it in the spring. I just hate to have it sitting in the driveway not being used.

Jen - that's a good idea about listing out of state on Craigslist. Never thought about that. I've purchased alot on eBay but never sold anything. Just need to learn more about that process.

BTW,

If you list on Cars.com or Autotrader.com, be prepared for all the calls from people who want to list your truck on their site/program for a fee. One guy called me twice a week for a month. Everytime I would get a call, I would get excited thinking it was a buyer and then after they pitch their spiel, I would get quite angry with them for wasting my time.

Do you know anyone with property on a busy road? That's what we do when we want to sell something. Just let it sit out with a for sale sign on it. We sold a truck and our TT that way (different times). If your dually is just going to sit in your driveway anyway, you might as well give it some exposure.

We have used http://www.autotrader.com You have the ability to pick how you want to list it. The option we use is run it til it sells. You just have to log in and re list (which is nothing to do) at the end of a short time period. You have to keep doing it (i think it is every 3 months) until you sell it or don't want to run it anymore.

We have sold quite a few vehicles on here and sold them to people local and a state away. I have no problems telling you that this is a good option.
