Need some game ideas for the holidays

My mother in law asked me last night if I could get a list of gift suggestions out to her in the next few days for Christmas/birthdays.

One thing we all really always like are good games, but not being in the US right now I am not seeing what has been coming out to know what is available.

We tend to like fast paced games that require skill (not long, drawn out strategy games and absolutely not luck based games). Things we really love are:
Banagrams
Cranium games
Scattegories
Taboo
Outburst
Set

etc.

We have tried Apples to Apples a few times (I KNOW people will recommend it) but never have liked it for some reason. Also Pitcureaka was fun for the first fw hours but you learn the board too quickly for any lasting appeal.

Our youngest will be 12 just before Christmas so it does not have to be a kid game.

ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thanks

it's a 2 person only game, but we enjoy mancala. the kids will pull it out and play it on their own, and the one we've got is small enough that it's often packed in our suitcase when we travel.

Thanks. Mancala is a great game. WE had a store bought set in the US and here i think the kids have made 3 homemade versions to play.

Any other suggestions?

Is anyone familiar with Bezzerwizzer? What? Or Killer Bunnies?
They all look intriguing on Amazon, but I would like to hear more about them.

my kids like phase 10 and uno for that matter-both tend to get played pretty frequently.

we were given a board game a few years ago-'kids vs. grownups'. it's pretty fun.

ImagineIF. It is a GREAT game for all ages. It is especially fun for adults when drinking has been involved

My kids are older now, 17 & 24, but they are always up for a good game of Monopoly or Life. Of course, it helps that we have Star Wars Monopoly and Pirates of the Caribbean Game of Life--who can resist being Darth Vader or Capt Jack Sparrow

I saw a 4-person mancala game at mindware.com. That might interest you.

Our two favorite games are strategy games. Blokus is our favorite game. The object is to place same colored tiles at the corner of same colored tiles. The strategy comes in by trying to block good plays for the other players. 2 - 4 players. Ages 8+. It is fun for adults and kids to play.

The other game is Gobblet. The object is to get 4 of the same color across, down, or diagonally. You start out with 3 sets of 4 stackable blocks. You can gobble up your opponents block with a larger one of your own. You can also move a block that you had placed on the board, but be careful to remember if you'll be giving your opponent a square back. This game is the best of tic tac toe and connect four rolled into one. My DH, who is NOT a game player, bought this for us when we were on vacation because he thought it would be fun to play. He still plays this game when the kids bring it out.

We've given both of these games to friends and family as gifts because we've wanted to share the fun with them.

Pit is fun, Rook... if you like Set, you might like these.

I'm not up on the newest games either but sometimes the old classics are great!

Oh I agree--I asked about newer games because we own just about all of the classics that we like. The only games mentioned on the thread so far that we do not own are Monopoly and Life (which we never cared for) and ImagineIF (thanks Golfgal--we will check that one out).

Since you like face paced games, have you tried Solitaire Frenzy? We have a blast with it and we're expected to bring it with to family parties.

We also like all of the Blokus games (3-D, the circle one...) and Ruminkub but they're pretty slow paced.

Phase 10 and Monopoly Deal are my kids' favorites. Scrabble, too.

I know this is on your list already, but my DS8 recently pulled Scattergories out of hiding and we've really been having a lot of fun with that together.

Some family favorites here are Sequence and Kazink (both by Jax which has several other games as well). Another is Rummikub. All three games are easy to play, somewhat strategy games and don't drag on for hours.

Taboo is a great game for a group.

Also Battle of the Sexes. This is where the guys have to answer typical "woman" questions and vice versa. We don't use the board just do the cards and keep score.

We still laugh at some of my Dad's answers. Here's one:

Q: Where would you wear a negligee?

My Dad's answer: To the movies.

L C R, stands for left center right . BEST GAME EVER , esp for a crowd.

You can play with chips or you can play with money . When the kids play we play with the chips provided or poker chips we have lying around . When its just the big folks, we play with money .

It gets loud and rowdy and tons of fun !!

Makes an excellent gift too !
