My DH & I are scheduled to go to WDW on 10/23-10/30 and are staying at the BWVs in a 1br. My dilemma is that I broke my ankle last Sat. and may have to have a pin put in it (will know on Tues.). If it is mending satisfactorily then I will only have the cast on for 6 wks. and should be ok to go because the cast will come off about 2 weeks before we go. We are so disappointed because we have our plane tickets, ADRs, etc. If I have to have a pin put in then all bets are off and I would probably have to cancel everything. I have been ordered to stay off my feet until I go in on Tues. and have been doing this so keeping my fingers crossed that all will go fine. Any advice from those who have been in my shoes would be appreciated!

I broke my ankle about 4 years ago. Unfortunately, mine didn't heal too well & I ended up having surgery to repair it. They basically made me a new ankle joint, but I healed very well after surgery. I was walking better after surgery quickly. In the meantime, I got really good driving an electric scooter. The best advice that I can give you is to do everything exactly like your orthopedic says. After the initial fracture, I wasn't ablt to take off of work as much as I should so I ended up walking more than I should even though I wore the walking boot all the time. After surgery, I did everything exactly as he told me. I didn't put any weight on it until he told me that I could & then I took it easy. I was walking very well in 6-8 weeks. I may be the only person I know that actually wore out a walking boot. I fractured my ankle in March, had surgery in September and wore the walking boot until December. I walked al over WDW the next March and at least once every year since

:) I say that what ever happens to the ankle...and I am sending you pixie dust.....get an ECV and enjoy your trip. I would do just about anything not to miss a trip like that. Even if it wasnt the perfect trip. Like the PP stated do exactly as the surgeon tells you. When all goes well, you may still need the scooter if the ankle is weak. My orthopedic injuries after a car wreck and further surgeries didn't keep me from being a bridemaid in two weddings and crutching down the isle.

Last Nov, I was hit by a car as I crossed the street - luckily I only had a serverly sprained ankle and a fractured knee, where I could put no weight on it. This was a surprise trip for my kids and we could not afford to lose all that $$ already spent. I got an ecv and enjoyed my trip. The plane ride was rough - my ankle and foot swelled A LOT because of the pressure in the plane. I say go, rent an ECV to have already to go at the front desk. Have a wheel chair ready at the airport - it can be done.

Sending Pixie Dust! :wizard: I agree - Get a wheelchair or ECV and go on your trip. Any day at Disney - even if your ankle is still healing - is better than staying home! Hope all goes well for you!

I would go and rent an ECV, if Disney's prices are too high I would rent from a non-disney place. They are very resonable, and deliver the ECV to your resort and pick it up, it is VERY easy.

I did not have an ankle issue but we almost had to cancel our July Disney trip due to a medical issue and were not certain until 6 days prior to the trip if we were going to be able to go or not (long story!). Luckily things worked out to our favor, but I know the stress and uncertaintly that goes along with it. So I hope for no pin. If not however, then I agree with the other posters and try ECV, at least you will be at Disney and not at home. Wishing you all the best, let us know how it goes. :flower3:

Last Fall, I had stress fractures across 4 bones on the top of my foot. I had a cast for a month, then a walking boot for 2 weeks. The second week in the boot, I was at WDW. I had rented a KneeWalker (a scooter that your one knee rides on with your foot up in the air behind it) while I had the cast on. I really should have taken the KneeWalker to WDW with me . . . I really could have gotten around so much easier. My foot wasn't ready for all the walking yet and I'm still having trouble with it. The idea of an ECV was sort of overwhelming for me, so I thought that I could tough it out, but I did regret it. The KneeWalker would have been so much easier for me to use there.

pixiedust:I hope you heal correctly and that you take care of yourself. Rent something that helps you get around if you need to, and have a great time.
