I'm looking to buy a MAC labtop, would the protection plan be worth the extra money? If I don't need it, then I really don't want to get it but if it comes in handy then it would be okay. Any opinions or advice?

YES, it is definitely worth it! It will pay for itself in ONE visit, should you ever need it.

I have used mine twice in the year and a half I have had my Powerbook. First was when the case latch broke "during normal use" (hubby slipped it off the coffee table onto its side, and the latch snapped, but only during "normal use conditions" does the protection plan apply--they never asked). It required the entire screen casing be replaced--imagine the cost of that. Free under the protection plan!

Then last month I had an overheating issue. They first replaced the motherboard to try and fix it (again, imagine the cost), which didn't. So they replaced the entire topcase, which did fix it.

All free.

Would have easily cost me another $1500 for these repairs without it.

I adore my Mac. It turned me onto Macs so that I just recently bought an iMac to replace my desktop PC. :) And yes, I got the protection plan for that, too.

My dd got the protection plan for hers, and we are so glad! Something happened to it at college (I think it had something to do with alcohol....UMass/Amherst, y'know) and the hard drive was fried. Got it replaced free of charge.

I would get it. But I am confused about one thing. I bought a mac book and water spilled on it, Apple would not cover it because it was accidental damage. How could I have gotten them to replace it since the previous post appears to be accidental damage?

On a happier note, my American Express card WILL be giving me money for a new one from their accidental damage coverage policy  :cool1:

If it's fried from water damage, you're out of luck. That's easily seen upon opening the case and looking at the hard drive.

Any other damage is harder to determine (unless driven over by a car or something), and they're much more likely to honor the coverage.

How did my DD get around it? I'm not sure. I would have bet that it was liquid (not water:mad: ) damaged, but she's a cute kid, and probably sweet-talked the computer geek. I wasn't there, I don't know.

I would get it. Also, just a note for anyone who didn't purchase it and wished they had... you can get it up to a year after you purchase your laptop.

yes, get it. I have it on all mine. so does my daughter. she got a new ibook, someone sat on the the top of it and the whole screen cracked. It did not cover that........and it stinks, cannot use it and still paying for it! It fix it is the price of a new one. but yes get it and MAC rules! I would never use anyhing else.

It is absolutely worth the investment! Mine is going to expire on my iBook soon and I am planning on renewing it for another 3 years. I also find it is especially handy for my iPods as well. The battery tends to wear out rather quickly on Shuffles and Nanos if it is used frequently (for example, I needed to charge mine 3 times a day just to use it around the house). I brought it into the Apple store, told them what was going on, and they gave me a brand new one no questions asked. Just another reason that Macs rule and PCs drool!

If you qualify for the education discount, the price of the policy is cheaper than retail.

I got it for my desk top and video ipod, but not for the Nanos. It is easy with the plan; my mouse keeps dying and I call and a new one is on my doorstep the next morning! A mouse shouldn't die, but since it does, I'm glad I have the special number and get it taken car of with no fuss.

And the service plan is less also. Can't remember how much though. for the ipod it was $47 instead of $59.

I have the protection plan on my imac G5, YES it is worth it!! I recommended getting the plan, I know when I had to take my G5 for an issue it would have been almost 500 if I did not have the plan.

It only costs me 2,229 for the labtop I'm looking at. It's 200 dollars more through the normal store. I dont get discounts on ipods though.

haha! that's where i'm working right now (and just got into grad school). it used to be ranked as one of the biggest party schools back in the 80s so i guess it's not as bad now...

as for the protection plan. i would get it. i've been using macs my whole life and have had an ibook and a powerbook and am glad that i got the protection plan, because there were some things that had i not had it, i probably would have had to pay something. i've never really had any serious problems, but at least i know that if my computer stops working i can just bring it in.

Thanks, I'm going to get it. I've got another week to get through before I can order it all.

If you do have a problem and need to call, the service people are super nice and spend as much time as necessary with you.
