The airport is not in downtown Newark and if you are going to a hotel in Woodbridge you won't have to go anywhere near any unsafe parts of Newark.

There are many places to eat close by. Within walking distance is the Woodbridge Center Mall - dinning choices http://www.woodbridgecenter.com/html/mallattractions.asp , across another corner there is a TGI Friday's. There was a Chi Chi's that I know is closed but I'm sure something else must be in there by now. If you did have a car, there are so many places to eat along Rt. 1. If you did have a car, I personally would use it to cross over to get to the Mall instead of trying to walk across the highway - but thats just me and knowing how people drive around here.

Chi Chi's is gone but there is a Ruby Tuesday's there.

With a car you have endless choices really.
