Need local help. Stay in Newport Beach OR San Diego?

I still struggle with my outwest trip!!! We are going aDventures by Disney to Hollywood, DL and then I was tagging on two nights at the Marriott Newprot Hotel Spa using my free points. Wanted to visit Balboa Island and the then the next day was wide open.

Per help from this board, I decided San Diego Zoo with some inside tours would be well received from my family.

I view the issue that San Diego is 90 minutes for Newport. Would I be better off to leave Disney, visit balboa for the day THEN drive to san Diego and sleep there for two nights insead? And fly home from San Diego vs John Wayme?

I guess the only thing I am saving is the return drive from the zoo but wondered if overall San Diego was a better fit for the last two days? I found the Marriott on Coronada Island to look nice but not sure if this is good locateion to zoo and airport or just suck it up and do the round trip to SAn Diego and keep status quo on the airport....

Seems pretty nice. Not exactly the Hotel Del Coronado (kind of the standard for waterfront hotels in California) but sounds like a nice enough place to stay.

As far as I can tell, it's an excellent location to get to the zoo or airport (less than 15 minutes to either). I suppose the only caveat is that the Navy flies jets out of NAS North Island, but then again San Diego should be well known for having a heavy military presence. Even an expensive place like La Jolla has to deal with military aircraft noise.

Hi OP. The Marriott in Coronado is near the ferry that goes over to downtown San Diego . We used it to come over from downtown to eat at a restaurant in the landing marketplace on our trips. As the previous poster said the drive from/ to the airport was easy (we stayed at the Del on 2 trips). There are several restaurants in the ferry landing marketplace that you can walk to the from the Marriott

Local here. Balboa is very small. A run down fun zone area, some beautiful homes, and a few touristy shops. I would skip that and go to San Diego. Coronado is a great area and would be a lot of fun.
