A few months ago I posted a thread here about which camera to buy for a teenager who is just starting out with photography. After reading the recommendations, I decided on a Canon Rebel XS as a Christmas gift for DD.

A couple of weeks ago I was able to snag a great deal from the Canon website on a refurbished Rebel XS with the 18-55 IS lens and a camera bag for $274.99 with free shipping! :cool1: I haven't installed the software yet to see how many shutter clicks it has on it, but it looks brand new.

Now I'm looking for an upgrade on the lens like a telephoto zoom. My DD is a figure skater, so I'd like to be able to "borrow" her camera to take shots of her on the ice when she's competing. I realize I'm not going to get sports photography quality. I just want something to try besides the lens it came with.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to which lens I should be looking at. I don't know if certain lenses only fit certain cameras. Canon has refurbished lenses on their website, so I'd love to get a refurb and save some money.

Will any of these refurbished ones work?

This board has been amazingly helpful to me so far! :goodvibes

Do you plan to use auto or will you take more control when you are photographing your daughter? The 55-250 is a good lens, but for ice skating you will need to use manual more imo. Otherwise, I would suggest the 85 1.8 or the 100 2.8

The 55-250, also called the nifty two fifty, is a great second lens with more reach which you will need for the shots you want to take. I think it is the perfect second lens for you kit lens. Amazon has it right now for $199.

Thank you for the responses and for pointing me in the right direction. I really appreciate it! :thumbsup2

yes, depending on your budget the Canon 55-250IS is your best bet but if you're shooting inside you need to take the camera off auto mode and learn about the different settings because the 55-250IS is a "slow" telephoto lens
