I was given 2 Kindles for Christmas and am now trying to decide which on to keep and which one to return. One is the basic Kindel. I like it because it is so light weight. It would be great to take to work &, of course, to Disney World. The other has the keyboard and free 3G. I like the idea of having the keyboard to download books. I think it ould be easier. But, I know nothing about the Kindle or how it works so I really don't know for sure. Is there any reason to keep both? My budget consious mind is having trouble grasping this idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

I reviewed Kindles before asking for one for Christmas and noticed than the one with keyboardand 3g is well worth it. When faced with a decision like that, I would go with the keyboard. It has everything that the other one has and then some. I do believe it is easier to navigate with that one also. Plus, either way, you are getting money back and that can go towards buying other books.

I would keep the keyboard with free 3G and return the other one without a doubt. The keyboard isn't that much bigger and it has the ability to get books anywhere. There is nothing the basic can do that the keyboard can't, so I don't see much benefit from keeping both.

I have a Kindle keyboard w/3G and I got a Kindle Fire as a gift. I will be keeping both since I prefer to read the e-ink and like the 3G, but use the other features of the Fire. Since both fill different needs (and the keyboard was the $85 Black Friday special), I'm keeping both ;)

What is the benefit to 3G? Don't you have to pay for that service if you are not in wifi?

That may be a dumb question.....I don't know that much about them.

The 3G is free on Kindles. Once you pay for the Kindle that includes it, the 3G is free to use with no fees. On the newer Kindles, the 3G can only be used to get books and stuff you purchased from Amazon. The Kindle Keyboard with 3G allows you to browse the web too (although it is slow and cumbersome).

The 3G uses the cell phone towers so you can get books even if there isn't any wifi where you are.

Interesting. I did not know that.

So, it is just called Kindle 3G?

I'm in the same situation... I think. I got a basic kindle and a kindle fire. I know absolutely nothing about nooks or kindles. I would personally use it mainly for checking out ebooks from the library (or free downloads). So, I was thinking just the plain basic one would be fine for me.

But then I was thinking, the other one would be nice to loan to my daughter for when she travels. She usually takes a library book or two with her, and this would be easier for her. I don't do much travelling any more, but can you do other things on the internet with the more expensive ones? I'm clueless here.

Another question: I haven't opened either one, knowing that I'll be returning one. What is the time limit on returning electronics? These were purchased at Walmart at the end of November.

Thank you everyone for the replies and advice. It is greatly appreciated. Mrspaha, you brought up an interesting question. If I kept both to loan to family for vacations, can they read any of the books I have purchased with either Kindle? Or do you have to buy separate books for each machine? I know absolutely nothing about these machines and am afraid to open one and then not be able to return it.

I have all of our kindles and ipod touches linked, so we all share books and apps (I have no apps, because I have just a 3g, no fire). Definitely keep the 3g. It was on sale on black friday for $85, the regular one is $79, so you might only get $6 back anyway, and having the 3g and keyboard is worth that (it regularly goes for $149).
