Need Insight on Job Interview

Someone referred me to a position for a company, but I was not looking for a job. Anyhow, I sent the company my resume figuring, how much can it hurt. I did not hear from this recruiter for two weeks. The other day he called and said they really liked my resume and want to set up a phone interview. I gave him days and times I can do it. Now he called me today and said they would rather just meet me.

Normally, I know you go through a HR rep first but the recruiter said I am going right to the Hiring manager and the VPs.

Can someone help me understand the process of interviewing and everything? Any HR people out there! Hey, how do recruiters work? Do I have to pay this guy if this company offers me a job and I take it?

You should not have to pay anything. The company will pay the recruiter a fee for finding you.

Who you interview with varies greatly from company to company, so I wouldn't be too surprised that you're talking to the hiring manager or VPs (although I would think that talking to any of the VPs at this early stage is a strong sign).

By "recruiter" do you mean a headhunter or someone with a third party job placement company? I've spoken with some of these third party recruiter companies before, and the company usually pays their fee as long as the employee hired stays for at least 3 months. If the employee leaves before that time, then the employee pays the fee. Things like that should be disclosed beforehand, though.

It does vary from company to company - your right - I should have clarified that this is a MAJOR GLOBAL company and I currently work for a MAJOR GLOBAL company and I know there is a large process where you have to go through HR then through the hiring manager and then maybe the VP. I was shocked when the guy told me that a whole bunch of people want to interview me right away.

He did say they were in a hurry to fill the position. Oh well - thanks for the insight!
