I would like to let my 4.5 y.o. start a pin collection. But am trying to figure out how she could wear them. She is pretty tiny and I am thinking a lanyard might be too heavy, and would annoy her wearing it in the parks.

What do your kiddos do? Anyone have any ideas?

Will she want to trade the pins or just collect them? My kids collect them but they're not interested in trading. Since they don't trade, they don't wear their lanyards to the parks. We just buy a few pins on each trip and they add them to their lanyards when we get home.

Well, you could put the pins on a vest or a sash (a la BBB). I believe there is some kind of pin fanny pack. If she will be wearing them, I would definately recommend investing in the locking pin backs (a tiny brass barrell shaped pin-back that locks w/a tiny allen wrench). I think the mickey-head backs seem to come off pretty easy.

My boys keep the pins on their lanyards, but they are defin. getting heavy. I usually just keep them in a ziplock bag & take them out when the kids want to trade with someone. It can get annoying though, having to rifle thru my backpack to find the ziplock. I'd be interested in some better ideas as well.
And I agree, the Mickey heads seem to pop off if the kids aren't being careful.

We hold our extra trading pins in those foam eyeglasses cases with a zipper from the dollar store. They work better than a ziploc bag because the pins can't puncture the foam. The foam also gives them a little bit of protection. We label the bins with 'trader' and 'keeper' so we know which is which.
