My business partner "eloped" last week. I knew he was going to be getting married, but they only told a few very close friends and family, and got married in a very small private ceremony with only a few members of his immediate family present.

I want to give him a gift of course.

I don't want to give them cash. He is in recovery, so nothing related to alcohol.

They are both Catholic, not particularly religious but he is very spiritual.

He is VERY proud of his Irish heritage.

First marriage for both of them.

They haven't and won't be registering. They own a home which is furnished and don't really need any "basics."

I need some ideas please!!

In the past I have done a really nice wicker picnic basket and some really nice cheese and crackers and a blanket and some sparkling cider and glasses. It was a big hit.

I usually give something crystal from Tiffany's. Since he's Irish, I'd suggest something Waterford (vase, bowl, etc.)

I was going to suggest a picnic basket too.:rotfl: What about a gift certificate to a nice restaurant?

Not sure what you want to spend, but, Waterford Crystal has beautiful picture frames, bowls and a stunning bride and groom statue. I gave the bride & groom statue to one of my dh's worker when he got married (they eloped also) and they absolutely loved it. I think it was alittle less then $200.00, but, if you want to spend less and are considering crystal - look at their picture frames, they are beautiful.

Two of my favorite gifts when we got married were a handmade ceramic casserole dish and a handmade huge quilt. Get him a really nice Irish wool blanket.

Thanks for the ideas, so far, keep them coming!

They are definitely not crystal statuette types of people. I'd like to spend in the $100-200 range.

What about a gift certificate for a couples massage?

Waterford has a great selection of other things, wine glasses or a nice serving tray maybe? Another 'Irish" option would be some Belleek china. They do make a nice gift for the Irish couple. Do they have all the Christmas decorations they want? What about a basket of ornaments, lights, etc.?

Maybe some nice barware, serving trays/dishes, kitchen gadgets?

I was also going to suggest something by Belleek. I have a couple of vases that I love.

Thanks for the ideas, but because he is a recovering alcoholic, I'm not really interested in giving them wine glasses or barware...

Do they watch movies?

I don't know if this would be appropriate as a wedding gift but you could do a basket with a movie or two with some favorite snacks and drinks that they like so they could have a "movie night." You might could make it more expensive and more of a gift by giving them a gift certificate to somewhere they like to eat and maybe even a day massage before dinner and then they could have a "movie night" to wind down their day together.

I thought about doing this for my brother and sis-in-law and it may not be an appropriate wedding gift that most people think about, but I just thought that I would share.

Good luck!!

We received a picnic basket for our wedding. It was not something we requested on our registry. It was the most stupid gift ever. Unfortunately, we had to keep it for several years, as it was a gift from SEVERAL of DH's siblings and their spouses. I was so relieved when I could finally take it to goodwill. Of course, we only received some "wicker" things for paper plates with the picnic basket.

I would second a nice frame. We recieved a nice crystal frame, and we still have a wedding picture in it (almost been married 17 years now!)

Or- what about a GC for a nice Bed and Breakfast nearby, or a nice restaurant.

A pottery vase or bowl or other piece of art.

I received a Cuisinart Griddler for Xmas. I LOVE this thing.

I never would have bought it for myself, but I've used it for almost every meal with it since I got it.

Since they eloped perhaps a certificate for a photograph of the two of them? Since they won't have formal wedding pictures this might be something they would like to have.

What about something with his family name and crest on it? Maybe something similar to this:

Since he's super into his Irish heritage, it would be meaningful and special to him.

Something from Waterford crystal or a nice Celtic cross would be good. If oyu want something a bit more of a "doing" thing, then how about a gift certificate to a restaurant or a local theater company?

Oh, this is a great idea! I wish someone had done this for my DH and I when we married! We also had a small, private ceremony and no professional photographer, so we would have loved to have someone give us a certificate to get good pictures done. Maybe even give the certificate with a less expensive nice frame!

You know the photo idea is a great one. I'm a professional photographer--although I don't normally do this type of photography. I could offer to do a photo session with the two of them, and then let them choose their favorites and print them out. Then take the one they like the best and put it in a Waterford frame. I'm totally liking that idea.

I think we have a winner! Thanks everyone! I'm actually meeting with him later today and I'll ask if he'd like me to do a shoot with him and his wife in a couple of weeks. I can probably borrow a friends studio with various backdrops and such, or we could go to Leu Gardens or Lake Eola, or all three, whatever they want.
