I have 10 year old twins - one boy and one girl. When they were little, they liked the same things and I could combine their parties.

We don't have a kid party every year, especially when they weren't in school yet, but this year they are turning 10. We are talking double digits here baby. I would really like to give them each a special party. They do share some of the same friends and have their own school friends too because they are in different classes. Of course, funds are limited and I will have to come up with the money or daddy will have a fit!:rotfl2:

I could just make cupcakes and send them to school, which I will probably end up doing anyway, ugh, but I need some ideas for parties that are doable if you are not filthy stinking rich.....oh, sorry. :rolleyes1 We have done Jeepers (indoor party place), a childrens museum and they have attended bowling parties. Their birthday is a week before Christmas, which also complicates things because everyone is so busy that time of year. I have thought about having whatever we have the week after Thanksgiving, before it gets to the Christmas crunch.:dance3:

I would appreciate any ideas you all might have. :grouphug:

Thanks!:lovestruc

Is your son a sports fan? One year my DS held off on his birthday party for a month & half so that he could have it at our minor league soccer teams home opener. It was a relatively inexpensive party (around $125), included up tickets for up to 10 people, pizza, and my son was taken over to the team locker room before the game. The team sang Happy Birthday to him and presented him with his favorite players jersey. He had a great night and all of his buddies had fun running around and watching the game (no noise or mess at my house :cheer2: ). Obviously there won't be soccer games in December in Upstate NY, but I know you've got hockey up there, maybe a minor league basketball team?

Now at 10, DD wanted all her girlfriends over to have manicures & makeovers. It was of course a sleepover and my neighbor who was really good at manicures came over to help with that and keeping me sane :rolleyes1

Skating party? Around here, you can rent the whole skating rink for $100 for 1-1/2 hours, choose your own music & games to play on the skate floor (lucky dice, limbo, sock hop, etc), & bring in your own food (ice provided). Both girls & boys all ages (including adults :)) usually love these parties. My ds's bday is 1-1/2wks b4 Xmas, I know how it is.

One option is to wait until right after the kids are out of school in June and do a 'half' birthday...with a pool party, or other outside party. Likely to be less expensive that way, and can be done together.

My daughter just turned 10 and we did a scavenger hunt at the mall. It was free other than taking the girls to lunch in the food court (which you don't have to do), the giant cookie cake I ordered (could do cupcakes from home instead), prizes and/or favors. Just came up with activities in the mall, made sure there was an adult with each set of 3 kids and assigned point value to the activities. I did give each group $20 to do some things (for example, find 3 things at the dollar store that my daughter would like was worth 5 points). You wouldn't have to give them money, just have them do things for the points. Winning team each got $10 to Claires and "losers" got $5 to Claires. You could have items from the $1 spot at target instead for the kids, winners get to pick first. It wasn't expensive AT ALL and you could make it even less expensive depending what you do with it. Boys and girls could have fun doing it! The kids had a great time!

a friend of mine held a mall scavenger hunt party for her daughter when she turned 10. they split the girls into teams of 3 (3 each with an adult) and each team had a list of things they had to do/find in the mall. the first team to finish are the victors. the girls had a fabulous time and you can be as creative or non creative as you want to be.

the one we went to were things wuch as:

take a pic with your cell phone (or the adult with you) of your group and a sales associate at a store
-buy something at the candy store for under 25 cents
-join the mall kids club and bring the membership card as proof

etc...the girls love trying to 'beat' the other team and love going round the mall. my friend had them eat in the mall for the meal and the sleepover was unplanned and they girls just hung out...

god luck!

I would like the idea of the mall if my oldest daughter will help out and maybe my sister will help me out - she loves the mall!:lovestruc

But what about the boys? pirate: Would be great if I could do it with them too - what kinds of things would boys look for in the mall? Can you tell, I don't really like the mall? It's okay, but I'm not into recycled air and crowds of people I prefer to shop on-line.:surfweb:

I haven't read the other replies yet, so sorry if this has already been suggested.

they could each have a friend over to make pizza, decorate the cake and eat it with ice cream, watch a rented movie, maybe do a craft, or play a video game, or if you have the money take them bowling, and then let the kid sleepover. in the morning you can make a big breakfast.

or if there is a lot of them do an at home movie party. rent a new release movie (or buy a new one you know you guys want anyway), have the kids make their own mini pizzas, have them decorate their own cupcake instead of cake, put out some fun candies, pop popcorn.

kids really just want to be together.

My DS was 10 in January. We have been doing pool parties at our local Y for the past 2 years. It is winter and most kids don't belong to the Y so they don't get to swim. You can bring your own food/drinks/cake and the pool has been running $100 for a 2 hour rental.

How about a cookie baking party? Make up a bunch of different cookie batters in the days before the party. Be sure to include gingerbread and sugar cookies that can be decorated after baking. Let the kids have at it with the sprinkles, candies, frosting etc and take home the results! That way you can combine the boys and girls and you are limited only ny the number of kids your kitchen will hold. You could even make it a competition. Boys vs girls. While one group is in the kitchen creating their masterpiece the other group could be eating hot dogs or pizza or whatever in the living room. Switch at the mid point through the party, leaving an hour at the end for cake, gifts and prizes for most creative, most colorful, least likely to be eaten, etc. Pick up the prizes at the dollar store and plan on one ging to each child as their goodybag with cookies they made.
