Hi,
We're going to WDW for this first time this October 12 - 20. We're traveling with our 2 children ages 4 & 5 and my parents. We will be leaving from O'Hare Airport arriving in Orlando. I've been pricing out tickets and it appears to be $450 a piece non-stop round trip. My father will only fly out of O'Hare and Non-stop.

Does anyone know which airlines fly non-stop out of O'Hare and what a decent rate is? Does anyone know if rates will come down anytime soon? I heard gasoline prices in Illinois are projected to go up to $3.00 a gallon this summer. I'm trying to decide when the best time to buy are tickets will be. But, I don't want to spend $450 a piece if I don't have to.

Thank you for your help!!!

I know you don't want to hear it but it makes a world of difference on costs to go Midway. I just helped a cousin with this problem and she lives in Crystal Lake, Il. which is close to you. If worse comes to worse, father should fly O'hara and everyone else should go to Midway or father should pay the difference for everyone via O'hara vs. Midway. You can meet up with father at MCO in Orlando if it comes down to it. I know this sounds harsh but you are not going to find a good deal out of O'hara in my opinion. I know it's a long commute to Midway but it's such a better deal it justifies the hassle.

You may not get much better for O'hara. Also, I believe rates will go up. I've played this game twice with Orlando within the last 8 months and it seems always to be better to book earlier rather than later. The only difference is if you really believe a recession is coming or is here then vacationing will be on the decline and airlines will offer deals rather then stop flights or have empty planes. Good luck.

I beg to differ with Bete regarding fares increasing for your travel dates. I'm quite familiar with airfare pricing and this route in particular.

It's too early to purchase your airline tickets. Southwest Airlines controls the fares between Chicago and Orlando. Southwest is not yet selling October travel and probably won't be until at least April or May. American and United fly non-stop from O'Hare to Orlando. They will likely match Southwest's fares once Southwest begins selling your travel dates.

We are going to Florida at the end of this week and were faced with a similar dilemma in flying out of Chicago. Made me very, very nervous to wait on the fares, but the advice Sheryl gave is correct. The fares really didn't drop til Southwest put their fares up for our time period. We bought our tickets for February 16-24 on October 12 (first day available on the Southwest site). The fares were more than $100 different than the lowest fares had been running, and about 200-250 dollars cheaper than the major airline sites/telephone reservation sites. We are flying in and out of Tampa at a total of $222.00 RT per person including all taxes and fees, but Orlando was almost $ for $ the same fares at the time we booked (I looked--Tampa was the better choice because I was going to be on business there while the family went to WDW).

I know it's nervewracking, but really hang in there and be patient. Also, be persistent, and check fares from O'Hare, Midway, and Milwaukee (my parents live in the Dundee area and fly out of all three airports very conveniently)

I agree with Travel Sheryl that Southwest controls the rate from Chicago to Orlando. Southwest usually publishes 5 months ahead. What I meant by buying early is when those rates are released I would grab them right away and not wait. I didn't mean buy now at the rates you stated. On the the contrary, I said buy at Midway
which to me implies go with Southwest when the rates are available. I've not been able to price match out of O'hara with Southwest rates to United or American. Maybe, Travel Sheryl has been able to do it. Good luck and I'm sorry if I wasn't more specific.

You just have to be diligent in checking fares. For example, I just used as my test dates 5/2-5/9 ORD-MCO. United is $186.30 for non-stop flights. Southwest is $195.50 for non-stop flights out of Midway. There's a fare sale going on right now.

Thank you very much for your advice. This is a great relief. I will definetly wait it out until SouthWest releases their rates for October.

I knew you guys could help me out!!!

I just found a cheaper direct flight. Spirit Air from Ohare to orlando $209. Sounds like a pretty good price to me...I used yahoo and searched direct flights....

I have never heard of this Airline. Does anyone know anything about it?

It also flys out of Newark, NJ. I have had many friends use it for their flights south. Don't remember any complaints...but I'm sure there is someone who doesn't like it..

Spirit has actually been ridden with complaints. They do not have agreements with any other carrier, so if there is a delay, for whatever reason, you must wait until they have a plane available for you. Their agents are very poorly trained.

Last month, during a snow storm, they left passengers stranded at many airports for up to 4 days. There was so little communication to the passengers that riots almost broke out and the police had to be called in.

I would never fly them.

Wait for Southwest to begin selling your dates and then fly either Southwest out of Midway or American or United out of O'Hare.

everyday. If that is the case with spirit I to would stay away... the last thing a family needs to do is get stranded on a vacation...Good luck!

I'm with you TravelSheryl!! I think we'll wait till SouthWest posts their rates. Do you think the odds are pretty good that I can 6 seats on a flight booking 4-5 months out? We are traveling Oct. 12 - 20th.

Thank you everyone for your input. I feel alot better about this.

Last summer, we flew out of O'Hare on Delta Airlines for about $120 per person round-trip. The only "drawbacks" were that we had to book on-line and the flight had a thirty minute layover both ways. We also booked at the last minute (about two weeks before our trip.)

Good Luck, and have a good trip.

My friend is a travel agent and she said that Spirit Airlines is the cheapest way to fly from Chicago to Orlando. She also said that it is the next "United" or "Delta". It is becoming very popular. I checked the rates for SNC for that week in Oct and the rate was $198 per person...roundtrip, non stop. This was flying out of O'Hare also. I think this is a great rate right now! You could hold out for Southwests rates, but I have a feeling Spirit will beat them. My parents are flying to Orlando On Spirit at the end of April. I'll post their reaction to their flights, when they get back. (We're also going to DW, that week, but me, dh, and kids are driving.)
