Things have been really tight this year my husband was placed on disability My niece is more like my daughter and she is turning 16 and I want to buy her soemthing really special but don't know that I can afford it Any ideas please

If you get a 50% off coupon from a craft store they have a lot of nice stuff there you could make her. Maybe a jewelry box?

On my 16th birthday, my grandmother made me a corsage out of 16 sugar cubes and white ribbon. She added rose buds to make it extra special. I still remember it 50 years later!

What is your budget?

I like to take my DN's places instead of getting them more "stuff". This year I am taking them on a cupcake bus tour of NYC. The tix were $44 each which is a bit more than I would normally spend for a birthday, but I think an experience is so worth it!

If you have a big city or something like that near you, maybe just take her for the day? I am sure she will get lots of birthday money from other sources that maybe she could shop and just spend the day with you?

A special Bible?
A simple necklace or bracelet?

Something that won't cost much but might be really special would be an invitation to spend the night with you. You could make a special meal, plan a movie for TV, give her a manicure, play games, etc. It should make her feel very special to have an aunt that cares to DO something with her.

Do you have more information about the bus tour?

Do you have more information about the bus tour?

The one we are going on is run by a local bus company in Reading, PA (where I live) called Bieber Tours. It was supposed to be last Saturday but they postponed it because of Hurrican Irene. It was rescheduled for Sunday 9/18 now. We stop at 5 different cupcake shops in NYC plus a stop at Carlos's Bakery in NJ. This is actually the first Cupcake Tour that this particular tour company has done, so we are going to be the guniea pigs. They had to add a second bus though so I think it will be pretty popular and I believe they got the idea from another tour company.

My nieces (they are turning 11 and 14) both have birthdays in September so I thought this would be a really fun and memorable activity to do with them :goodvibes

I see you have a Disney trip coming up....could she come with you? You said she was like a daughter to you, so this thought popped up. Your other children might like having her around too. It is several months away so she might have time to save up for her spending money.

What about a piece of jewelry that's nice, but not too expensive?

My aunt got me a sterling silver necklace with an uncut amethyst (my birthstone) in it for my birthday, along with matching earrings. She let me pick them out, and the necklace was only around $30. Every time I wear it, I think of my aunt. It's really special to me, and I wear it almost every day.

I made my niece a photo book on snapfish, it cost about $33. She loved it.

When I turned 16, my mother bought me a Sterling Silver Tiffany Key chain, engraved with my initials and birth date - perfect for a girl just getting a driver's license! I'm 26 now and still use it!

While those key chains run $100+ at Tiffany now, I have bought similar gifts for friends from a local shop that sells jewelery and does engraving.

They have silver-plate key chains in different styles and they're very reasonably priced. I just got one for a friend who received her Masters degree. It was about $25 after the engraving. It was personal, elegant, and not a huge budget buster. She seemed to really like it.

I did a quick search and found lots of online retailers who sell things like that.

They have stainless steel and silver so there's probably something that can fit your price range.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions I gave her a birthstone ring last year and a photo book last Christmas I am thinking maybe a necklace that sounds nice do they have them with like sweet 16 and maybe her birthstone I will check in to that Thanks alot I love my disboard friends:lovestruc

I think the necklace idea is great! Sterling silver would be a great budget friendly alternative to gold. I would suggest a pendant with just her birthstone over a sweet sixteen charm though. In a few years she would probably not want to wear a sweet sixteen charm but a simple birthstone pendant will always be in style. I say this because I have a pile of old charms that I am thinking of selling because gold is so high and I haven't worn any of them in years.
