I am thinking this would be a great trip for me. But, I do not know the area. Are there hotels near by? A good class hotel like Hilton or Marriot? How about the "Presidio" any hotels in this area? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Disney Famly!!! :lovestruc:tink:

You could ask this on the California thread and get lots of answers.

I will say that having been all over the US, San Francisco is the best tourist city. Not just because of the great sites but the ease of traveling around the city.

You can find some nice hotels by Union Square or Nob Hill, there is a marriot at both but also many other places to choose from. For a one of a few days you can buy a Muni pass, which will be good for the Cable Cars, Trolleys and buses to get around. Trust me it's really easy and simple. I live in the middle of no where, 100 miles from an interstate and love how easy it is to go all over that city on public transportation.

In that area, I can't think of any hotels off the top of my head. It's in a parkish area if that makes sense. If you look at the location on google, it's all green. Part of the problem is that the museum is in an old army barricks area that was transformed. If you're renting a car during your stay that would be easier. You can take a taxi, but make sure that you get the main number to call them back when you're done. Buses aren't really that plausible either ~ same reason as the taxis. Something you could look into are the Zip Cars. I know they have them in the city although not sure about locations. If you stay in a hotel downtown somewhere, you could rent those for the day or a couple of hours and drive to the museum.

On a side note, the museum is really cool. In the backdrop of the museum is the bridge, and you can get some really good pictures there. There's also a restuarant near the entrance to the parking lot area, or really close by, that has some good food and if the weather's good, you can sit outside looking out to the water and the bridge.

Hope that helps. Have fun if you get out there!

I'm not sure of any close to the museum but I would recommend looking into hotels near Fisherman's Wharf. The Wharf isn't that far from the Presidio and there's a lot to do around there too.

i'm goin there this weekend i'll keep an eye out.

Great information. Thanks all of you. I look forward to hearing back from you, wdi2b. :tink:

I'm a museum member and visit frequently since I live in northern California. Because the museum is in the Presidio, there isn't a hotel within reasonable walking distance. There are a few hotels along Lombard Street leading up to the Presidio, but I think the biggest "name" I saw is Travelodge. There is a hotel right near the Presidio entrance, but that's still a good walk to the museum itself.

I took SF public transit to the museum once. Never again. You'll likely need to take multiple MUNI buses just to get there. It would be much simpler to rent a car and have a GPS system.

That said, the museum is an absolute must for Disney fans. It makes the Walt Disney One Man's Dream attraction at WDW look like nothing. The only other place I've ever seen with as much Disney history is the Walt Disney Archives and I only spent 15 minutes in the Archives main lobby on the studio lot. There is so much to see in the museum that it could take 6-8 hours in one setting to feel like you spent sufficient time in every gallery.

If you're attending a film screening or lecture as part of your visit, that will take away from museum time and requires separate admission. If you love the film being screened and/or discussed, do not miss out on this. Please ask if you have more questions. I cannot recommend the museum enough to anyone, even moreso if you're a fan of Walt Disney.

Hey Marla...when are you thinking about going??? Cheri and I would love to go too! Might be a fun girls weekend, unless you already have plans with someone else. Let me know! Miss you!!!

There aren't any brand name hotels walking distance to the museum. If you want the Hilton or Marriott, the closest ones will be in Fisherman's Wharf. Is there anything else you plan to do or see in San Francisco? I know a lot of tourist like biking from Fisherman Wharf's to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. If that was your plan, the museum would be in between. Public transportation will require a transfer to another bus (so 2 different buses). A taxi is another option. Just remember to write down the phone number for when you leave to call for a pick-up. Oh and most importantly, if you take a taxi, tell them you're going to the Presidio. The driver can easily think downtown when he hears "Montgomery."

Great point about saying the Presidio. There are two Montgomery Streets in San Francisco, and you want the one in the Presidio. Otherwise you'll end up in downtown San Francisco.

Good point about Montgomery Street, I saw that one on Google Maps. It confused me when I was trying to find the Presidio. I really appreciate all the help. This trip is coming together nicely because of all of you. Any more information will be also appreciated. Dis Rocks!! :tink:

Check out the Holiday Inn at Fisherman's Wharf. It is one of the more reasonably-priced hotels in SF - for SF, that is. You will still need to take a cab to the museum, but the hotel is somewhat near Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, The Cannery and North Beach.

You might want to check out the "hop on" bus. I recently saw it dropping folks off at the museum. I would think the bus goes by all the major tourist areas and hotel zones. This might be a good alternative to a cab or the MUNI (public bus transportation).

Be careful if you rent a car with a GPS. My Garmin GPS gets "confused" in the Presidio where the museum is located.

I hope this helps.

Michael
