Need Help.IEP Questions

No not tested yet.I have a meeting with her teacher tomorrow.I'm going to talk to her about it then. I just want to have all my ducks in a row.

Thanks so much.I have been googling but it is all so confusing. I knew I would get so much clear in fo on here.

Her main things are Reading adn Sight words. The thing with the sight words are mind blowing. She can get big words like "Together" but can't get "and" "the" words like that. Her teacher is great (she has had her for 2 years 1st and 2nd grade) She has come a long way.But with all the cuts I'm scared for her now.

Have you seen this video series on sight words? It helped my son a lot.

I don't know how cutting all the aides is going to end up being legal. If a child has an aide written into an IEP, it's simple contract law.

Thanks for the sight word info.I'm going to order that!!!

My school cut all the in class rooms aides.27 in all in 3 elem.Schools.There are going to be 8 teachers cut soon too. Even more if the school Budgets don't pass on Apr20. I know the special ed in class support will stil be there.I think that is how they are getting around no aid. It is a scary time in Public school right now in NJ.

A 504 is typically used for a medical problem that requires special accomodations. My son has a 504 because of a hearing loss. Even though he was behind in school (by probably a year), his 504 only addresses issues/accomodations directly related to his hearing loss.

OP, unless your child has a diagnosed medical condition or learning disability it does not sound like your child would be a canidate for an IEP or 504. Of course every school district/state is different so I would ask your specific district what their requirements are.

Actually, this is not always the case. A 504 could be written for many things like homework completion, organization, etc...not necessarily a MEDICAL problem.

For the OP:

At risk is not special education.

You need a BAT team (school psych, teacher, administrator, guidance, parent, etc) and a referral and you will most likely need a diagnosis for a learning disability before an IEP can be written. More than likely they will tell you a couple of months behind is not significant...not a lot of discrepancy (the rate of her progress vs those of her typical peers, that is a simple way to explain it)

I am a special education teacher, btw. I also have a child with LD in a special ed classroom.

All states are different, where we live can be and probably is, totally different than where you live but this is the general process.

Thanks. She was really behind in 1st and 1st half of 2nd. But her teacher and I have helped her so much (teachers words about me I didn't think I did enough, guess Iwas to hard on myself) that she is now only a few months behind. So she wants me to wait until after 3rd and see what happens.
I'm just really scared she will fall behind again with all the cuts that the Governor of NJ forced the schools to do. I have a bunch of stuff I'm going to do with her this summer and going to see if I can budget a tutor too.
