Need Help from someone who knows about Canon Digital Rebels

I own a Canon Digital Rebel XT and now XTi and a Canon Image Stabalizer 28-135mm wide angle lens. My problem is every so often I am getting a error 99 when I go and take a picture. It started with the XT so I thought it was the camera and went out and bought the XTi. Now it's doing the same thing with this camera. Canon suggests that it is a communication problem with the lens. With up coming events and a trip to Disney I'm not sure it is worth sending the lens back to canon to see if it can be fixed. Has anyone ever heard of this error or problem? Can anyone please help me!

oh how i feel for you to make a long story short, my 28-135 wasn't working, finally after 8 months and many ups deliveries between me and NJ they replaced it. ..send it in if it's still under warranty. they are pretty fast in turning it around, i usually had it back within 7-10 days of my drop of , sometimes quicker

you can try cleaning the little brass squarish things on the lens and body coupling but don't hold your breath
