to all you generous "gifters" out there, remember that in addition to tax considerations there are also medicare considerations. assetts that are transfered or gifted to another person don't get excused for medicare purposes except under VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES. so while you may have "gifted" away a good portion of your assetts (in many cases to shelter it)-medicare will still consider it yours for up to years to come.
