I'm taking my son and his best friend to DL at the end of August for his 10th birthday.

I want to do something special on the Tuesday night for his birthday but can't seem to narrow it down. He wants to go to Jazz Kitchen to try beignets. But I wonder how the rest of the menu will be for them. We could always just get those at the express kitchen.

Maybe a WOC package? Fantasmic dessert? Is Blue Bayou worth the money?
The other issue is that my sons not a huge eater so I hate to pay for a huge meal. Would they be able to split a plate? then I'll just promise dessert or churros later.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

My DS8 and DS10 loved the Jazz Kitchen both times they went. I don't know what the age limits on the kid's menu are supposed to be, but our servers have not had any issue with DS10 ordering from it. The kid meals are $9.95 which is a little pricier than some other kid meals, but we felt it was a good value for the quantity of food. No drink is included, but an ice cream sundae is. Since your son is not a big eater, maybe he would be ok with having his meal off the kid's menu and ordering some beignets to add to his dessert.

As for your other suggestions, depends on what your son is into. If he's not a big eater but really wants to see WoC, maybe you would like to try the picnic package which is reasonably priced and includes a WoC ticket. Then you would have plenty of money left over for special desserts or treats. If Fantasmic is his thing and you really want to save yourself the time and hassle of staking out a spot, the dessert seating does sound very special, and since the food already comes in a box you can take leftovers back to your room for later. My boys thought Blue Bayou was neat the one time they went there, but to DH and me it wasn't worth the expense. My brother, on the other hand, goes to the Blue Bayou every trip and proposed to his wife there. Many others on this board enjoy the BB atmosphere. If your boy is a POC fan, it might be worth it, otherwise, your other ideas might be better.
As far as splitting things goes, I frequently split meals for my sons because they're not always big eaters. Usually I just ask the server to bring an extra plate, and DH and I take care of dividing things up. Splitting is also a great way to have room for dessert. Some places like Blue Bayou will charge you a split plate fee if you ask them to do the splitting for you since they will give each person the sides and split the main entree. Also, Blue Bayou is unlikely to let your 10-year old order off the children's menu, so that may not be a solution either.
I know also that you can get beignets at Cafe Orleans, so that would be another possibility. I will admit though that no one in my family enjoyed their meal or experience there the one time we went, so we have not returned.

Thank you very much! Very helpful info, I think I'll stick with Jazz Kitchen.

Sadly we did not end up having time to do the Jazz kitchen so I will be curious how it goes for you.

I just returned from a week trip for my DDs 13th birthday and we did the BB for lunch. We ordered just one Monte Cristo and split the gumbo and rolls that come with it as well. It was the perfect size for us and made it more friendly on the budget. ;) She loved it and we would definitely do it again. With her birthday button she also got ice cream after which was enough to share between us.

We split most meals at the park. Breakfast at River Belle twice and between DD, DGM, and myself we would get 2 Steamboats and an extra plate to share between the 3 of us - it was perfect.

There truly are so many options you can choose for his special birthday. We did the Fantasmic, and while spendy, I found it worth it for the knowledge of having a seat and not being stuck waiting around for hours. The desserts were great and I got refills easily as needed. We did bring a fair bit back with us.

One note on the seating for Fantasmic. Some oft he seats are near the cement columns and can block a bit of the few so choosing ones more in the middle of a row I think is preferable.

No matter what you choose have a great trip and a happy birthday to your DS!

DD10 picked Blue Bayou for her bday. She loves it there. She also really enjoys the Jazz Kitchen so either one of those would be good. We didn't "do" anything else, our family "thing" is that the bday person gets to pick dinner so she picked BB, DD14 picked AG when she turned 13, DBF picked BB and I think I did BB too. LOL
