Need help finding good canoeing/hiking

Has anyone had experiences with canoeing or hiking near Orlando? These are things DH would enjoy doing besides the parks at WDW. It would be a break from crowds , seeing more of natural Florida.

y-m, this is a GREAT area for seeing some of the real Florida. Seminole County just to the north has some superb opportunities in Wekiwa River State Park and Blue Spring Park, both of which offer some good canoeing and hiking through some beautiful countryside. Check out Katie's River Landing www.ktland.com for the best canoeing and www.visitseminole.com for the full range of opportunities here. You will also get some great info on www.sunandfun.com/parks which covers all of Florida. Forever Florida is another brilliant eco-tourism site with a host of opportunities, and is one of the best of its kind I have seen anywhere. They are out to the south past Kissimmee and St Cloud (it is about a 90-min drive, but well worth it, IMHO). Check them out on www.foreverflorida.com

Thanks for answering SimonV. Sounds like something DH will really enjoy. Some more questions: Do you see alligators when canoeing at Wekiwa Springs? I am hoping not!

How far is this area from Kissimmee?

y-m, Wekiwa River and Katie's Landing is about a 45-minute drive north on I4 from WDW. I'm honestly not sure about gators. I've never seen any up there on the few times I've been and it is such a popular canoeing spot it is hard to imagine people going where there might be a chance of bumping into a large reptile. However, this IS Florida, and it is water, so I think the best answer is to check with the people at Katie's.
