Need Help Convincing Wife to Buy DVC!

I've seen a few comments about the difficulty of trading into DVC. I believe that based on my experiences with RCI trying to go other places, and know people who own in II. My question is how easy is it to trade DVC into II? I this highly depends on when and where you want to go, but just in general how positive is the experience? We've pretty much decided to buy into DVC as I indicated earlier, but now we are debating point levels. We'd like to go to Disney every other year. So do we buy the minimum and accomplish that? Or do we buy more so we can trade? We are west coasters, I'd love to balance the off years with a trip to Hawaii.

The sales pitch we got at Saratoga indicated it would be fairly easy, but I am wary of timeshare sales pitches (although admittedly, the Saratoga sales pitch was great- no pressure at all)

I believe one of the biggest questions to ask yourself is: how hard would it be to re-sell the timeshare if my circumstances changed? There is nothing more difficult than knowing people who own a timeshare, never use it (for health reasons or whatever) and who are stuck with those yearly assessment fees regardless. It can be very difficult to get rid of a worthless timeshare!!!

OTOH, it's gratifying to note that the resale market of DVC points is very strong.

II is an exchange company just like RCI - if they have it you can generally (not always) get it.

Marriott have a 21 day period to get other Marriotts.

the more flexibility you are the greater chances of getting the timeshare you want.

if you can only go at one time of the year - the less your chances are.

II can't give you what they don't have.

what are you wanting to trade for - country, timeshare (if possible), and dates?

also remember that the concerige collection does not go through II - if you want something there - DVC can generally get it.

I'd recommend buying just enough DVC to meet your "every other year" plans ... then seek a non-DVC solution for Pacific journeys.

We own and use a mix of timeshare properties. Each has different strengths and benefits.
  • Worldmark the Club is a points-based system offering 50+ resort locations - many in the western states. Similar to DVC, our WM credits may be used at any property w/in the system, may be used for short stays or long stays, may be used in any size unit, etc. WM owners may join RCI and/or II to take advantage of exchanges and bonus vacations/getaway weeks. We use this membership for weekend stays, family celebrations, etc.
  • Our South Africa week gives us a cost-effective exchange each year. It isn't a power-trader ... but has done very nicely for us.
  • Two of our local resorts give us access to day-use. One has golf and equestrian covered by our fees and the other gives us a free "bonus week" with each RCI exchange.
Sure, DVC will trade "out" well (and with reduced exchange fees) -- but take some time to evaluate other options for "best fit" against your intentions.

Thanks bwvbound. We have family that owns in WorldMark and have considered that. (they are renovating an old hotel across the street from me).

I've stayed at their Oceanside CA property before- nice.

Definitely looking forward to buying into DVC.

I think you mis-interpreted artvandelay's post(s). I believe he is asking about the points he will receive on 3/1/2005.

The points received on 3/1/2005 are good for stays that occur between 3/1/2005 and 2/28/2006. If the points are banked, they will be good for one additional year - i.e., for stays between 3/1/2006 and 2/28/2007. If you do not use the banked points prior to March 1, 2007, you will lose them.

Note also that banking and borrowing are final transactions. Points that are banked or borrowed cannot be returned to their original use year.

As jimmytammy posted, there are no fees to bank or borrow points.

Best wishes -

CarolMN

Thanks for correcting me! That makes it sound even more flexible::yes::
