A friend of mine just moved up the road from me. She was staying here with me for a while until she found an apartment, but she couldn't bring her dog to my house so she left it at a friend's house back in her home town. Well, apparently her "friend" didn't take very good care of the dog. She left her outside and only fed her maybe twice a week she said. She didn't find this out until the other day when she went to pick up her dog. Now she's infested with fleas really bad and we can't get her to eat. She's really acting kind of sluggish and just lays around. She doesn't play, bark or run around at all either.

The thing is, since she just moved into the apartment, she can't afford to take her to the vet right now. She gets paid every two weeks, but she has to pay rent with her next pay check and will only have enough money left to buy her groceries and stuff. So it will be at least a month before she'll be able to take her to the vet. Does anyone have any idea what we can do to make her feel better? I'm wondering if maybe she has a tapeworm or something? I was going to take her to the pet store tomorrow to buy her some flea shampoo and I was looking online at some medicine and I saw some deworming medicine and was wondering if maybe that's what she needs? Anyone have any advice???

Some friend! That friend should be presented with all the bills that puppy's going to have. :(

That dog needs to go to the vet ASAP
If she can't pay for it herself. check with the vet- perhaps they can allow some sort of payment plan, or check with the SPCA and see if there is something they can do.

This animal is sick because of neglect. There are many things that can be wrong with it, and the longer the poor thing goes without treatment, the more likely it could die. Your friend can also get in trouble for violating animal cruelty laws if you have them in your state. I know here you can get arrested for not seeking medical treatment for your pet - it's considered neglect.

I would urge your friend to seek medical care for the dog immediately. If you try to treat the dog yourself and you misdiagnosed the problem, it can lead to further problems. It might also behoove her to report the friend to the ASPCA for neglect. not feeding an animal is cruel.

Take care of the fleas & check for ticks first. Fleas & ticks can make an animal sick on their own. I wouldn't give any meds for anything else unless you see clear evidence of worms.

If she has a regular vet or you do you might call them and ask about fees. Let them know the situation and maybe they can work out a payment plan if needed.
