My dd 7 is doing theatre camp this summer and they will be performing the Wizard of Oz this weekend. She has two parts but apparently they are providing the dress for one of the parts. But she is also playing a Munchkin so they sent home a yard of rainbow colored fabric yesterday and told us to make some accessories with it. She has to wear the T-shirt they made in camp and a pair of shorts in a contrasting color. I thought about a vest but they would prefer that she not cover up her shirt. I am drawing a blank as to what to do with this fabric!

Any creative people have any ideas?

What about making a sash for her waist and possibly a hair accessory? And, could you sew some patches around the shorts made from the material?

what about leg warmer's and arm warmers?? just sew tubes..

It never ceases to amaze me how camps and schools think that Moms can simply whip up, sew, or even create costumes. This stresses me out. This is not the 1950s- not everyone can sew anymore. I'm NOT crafty- I'm incompetent in that area.:rotfl2: Sorry- had to get that off my chest because just seeing your post strikes panic and fear for me. All I can think of is to maybe cut rainbows out of the fabric and sew or glue them to her clothes (or safety pin if you aren't allowed to actually permanently attach them), or to maybe cut strips and make ribbons for her hair (or something more complex if you are capable) and maybe somehow twisting and tying some strips together to make a belt.

Another thought along the same lines as above- you could turn some strips into twisted or braided bracelets. Maybe you could make a bandana to tie around her neck out of part or it, or if not just ribbons for her hair, a headband.

When I played a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz when I was 9, my mom made the whole costume (thanks, Mom!). But, what got the most attention was the pair of "munchkin shoes" she made out of a colorful pair of socks. She sewed and stuffed upturned toes onto to the ends. I would think this would be pretty easy to do over sneakers - make shoe covers. I would suggest two pieces sewn together that hook in the back with velcro. Stuff the toes or use fabric stiffener.

Thank you all for the suggestions, Love the ideas of bracelets and leg warmers. Had thought about a hair accessorie but she has to wear her hair down for her other part so wasn't sure what to make. Maybe a bow that she can slide in herself, not sure yet. I love the shoe cover idea but not sure if I could pull that off. I can do some crafts, Sewing, not so much, lol. When I have time I get my MIL or Mother to do those sort of things but we don't live close to them so thats not an option this time. Wish they would have had the kids do this stuff at camp too. LOL! I am just not feeling very creative this week, I guess.

thanks for all the suggestions,
