My DH really wants us to take a day/afternoon trip to a beach on our upcoming Disney trip. Anyone have any recommendations of a public beach close to Orlando? We aren't expecting to do much except let our girls see the ocean, play in the sand, pick up a few shells...

Thanks!

No beach is really close to Orlando but Cocoa Beach is one of, if not the, closest. It's about an hour east of Orlando via SR 528. The better shelling beaches, though, are probably on the Gulf of Mexico - Florida's west coast where the water is calmer and generally warmer. Beaches over there are from 90 minutes and more from Orlando via I-4 West to Tampa and then I-75 or I-275 depending on where you'd be beaching.

Try Lori Wilson park beach in Cocoa. That is where we went in June for a short day trip like you are describing. It was nice, uncrowded and very family friendly! Also, we made sure to go during the middle of the week just to make sure it wouldn't be crowded. Look it up on beachhunter.net!
