I saw a couch for a great price today and it looked amazingly like real leather. I really need something kid and dog friendly! So what do you think of yours?
We opted for leather on the seating area and matching vinyl for the sides/back. Cut the cost considerably over 100% leather and it actually does match. This may be an option. Leather is supposed to wear 4 to 5 times longer than fabric. Dirty doggie footprints wipe right off. Can't vouch for kids.
You can get a Leather Guardian package for added protection against stains and tears. We went with the leather/vinyl combo since the couch is against a wall with an end-table at each end. I keep my dog's nails trimmed and filed well, but she hasn't scratched the sofa and it is one of her favorite sleeping spots. Our set is Berkline. Happy furniture shopping.
Thanks! We have a relatively new couch in our great room but we have an extra room downstairs that we all flop in and watch t.v. I don't want to have to worry about the kids eating on it or the dogs on it so I was thinking this would be a good option-but I've never had anything but cloth. Our old sofa is starting to smell doggie.
We really like ours. I am the one that normally gets cold and I just put a blanket or something on the cushions where I am sitting. DH, who usually gets hot, is fine with it. All our cats like it.

I understand what you mean about a "doggie" odor. We got a new dog in December and since she wasn't trained, we put throw blankets (and water proof pads) over our couch. I washed the throws frequently since they were doggie smelling. When she was fully trained, we pulled the throws off for good and the couch looked so worn, threadbare and shabby. The furniture was over 12 years old, so it served us well.
I didn't think I wanted leather, but so much of the nap had worn off our furniture between the recliner seats, on the foot rests and the seats. Leather shouldn't show this. We bought this in the hopes we will get 15-20 years from the furniture. Our couch and love seat honestly was our vacation this year. The set is very comfortable and gives our living room a warm look that the fabric didn't have. I don't find the leather too hot or too cold. My grandmother had vinyl furniture that that stuff was miserable. Real leather isn't like that; no sticking to the furniture when you wear shorts! I've found the furniture to be cooling during the summer. Can't speak for the winter at this point.
