My mom has to go back to Philadelphia to Wills Eye Hospital. She was diagnosed with cancer in her eye four years ago, and it may have returned. Anyway, we are staying at the same motel that we did four years ago and for each of the checkups that she has had to have over the years, but the only restaurant we can see nearby is a Dave and Busters. When we drove down there, we had to pay for parking and wait quite a long time for a table and the service was terrible. So, we are trying to find alternatives. Anybody familiar with the area, do you know of any good eateries near there?

Thanks.:cutie:

I work right right near D & B. Will you have a car? You coud go onto Spring Garden street from Delaware Avenue and make a left on Spring Garden. At the corner of 4th and Spring Garden there is Greek diner called Spring Garden restauarant. Food is good and plentiful but parking can be tricky.

If you continue down Spring Garden to 10th and Spring Garden and you will see a Spaghetti Warehouse. They have a parking lot in the back and the last time i went it was free.

If your hotel is near the Septa line, you could get on the El (market frankford blue line) and take it to South Street. South Street has a ton of restaurants.

If you want to walk over the delaware ave bridge, you can end up on Front Street (I usually work on the opposite side so this may be not be entirely correct). if you can get to front street, there are a ton of restaurants in that section of old city.

Parking in Philly can be really tricky so read the signs and make sure you know your meter times. You will more than likely have to pay for parking for almost everywhere in Philly.

If you have a car and make a right onto Delaware Avenue and follow the road you will find all types of plazas. Right near the Ikea is a Famous Daves BBQ. Before the Ikea you will see some strip malls, a movie theater and some stores on both sides of Delaware Ave (also called Columbus Blvd).

Be forwarned, before the Ikea you will see a few strip clubs.

If you want to walk from Wills Eye hosp itself, on Walnut and 9th, there are some great places. Jefferson Hospital and Walnut St Theater are right there and it is a fine area to walk around. I am down there 2-3 times a week.

La Scala at 7th and Chestnut is awesome, upscale pizza, itallian and creative food. therir steak is wonderful. I have never has a bad meal there and eat there regularly and they validate parking. www.lascalasphilly.com

Jones is across the street and it is homey style food.

there is a basic Chinese place is along Walnut around 7th

there is a Mexican place, El Azteca Uno Mexican with cheap and good food on Chestnut between 8th and 7th,

there are a ton of other places between 11th and 13th right on Walnut, The Irish Pub, Marathon Grill, Wendy's, Moriarity's pub...

There is a Primo Hoagies at 11th between walnut and Sansom, good to take out for later.

You can also walk to the Hard Rock Cafe which is on Market at 11th st
or Reading Terminal Market for Cheeze steaks!

PM me if you need any other info.

This info is from when I was there on business several years ago (more than 10) but I see they still have a web site and I bet it is just as good. It is Pete's Famous Pizza, 116 North 21st. One of the features is that they deliver but you will have to call to see if you are to far away. I would get a large salad and strombolie and that would last two meals. If you drive watch the one way streets as well as parking. I would know I was close when I saw the Police cars as many officers ate or picked up their meals there. When I ate there it was nice to see the familys there.
Hope the exams go well.

I conducted a training at Thomas Jefferson last year. We LOVED Moriarty's and several trainers have been back since!

Right across the street from Moriarty's is an Italian restaurant called Portofino. It is a little higher priced but the food was DELICIOUS! We were there last year during Restaurant Week so we got the Prix Fixe (sp?) deal.

I'm not good on directions but on one of the cross streets is a GREAT Mexican restaurant called El Vez. Really neat decor and wonderful food. Maybe one of the Philly experts can help with details!

Moriarty's is a staple around here with the theater crowd so just watch your timing. They can get hectic for a breif time frame.

El Vez is a few blocks down, I think it is 14th or 13th and Sansom. Not cheap at all but good food and very cool inside. It can get crowded with the happy hour crowd.

There is a new BBQ place, Smokin Betty's really close Samson on 11th.

there is an upscale Indian place in the Ben Franklin Building which is at 9th and Chestnut, a block from Wills. It is pretty new and I've never been there but it looks very Disneyish inside.

Pete's hoagies are pretty good but the girls at the office don't like the pizza there.

What motel are you staying at? There are SO many places to eat in and around you won't have any trouble finding something that will fit your needs.

Chinatown (Sang Kee is our favorite) or the Reading Terminal Market (DiNic's, Delilah's, Salumeria, Pearl's Oyster Bar, Amish soft pretzels, Down Home Diner).

Right next to the Reading Terminal Market is Maggiano's. It is an Italian chain but very good. It is one of our favorites.

Why patronize a mediocre chain when you can eat at one of the city's many great independently owned restaurants?? :sad2:

Because it is affordable and parking is easy to find. Many of the options listed above are also chains others are quite pricey. There are plenty of wonderful restaurants in Philly. Many of the independents are not open for lunch so the OP needs options.

I personally do not enjoy the atmosphere of RTM because it is usually very busy.

Shame the Broad st dinner is gone, that was super....there is another diner near by a 50's type., just off Broad, down below Mkt. St....I have to think or ask dh the name of it...kind of like a Happy Days....THATS IT MELROSE!
Google the adddy and if you take a GPS you will be fine.
There is also a few Dunkin Donuts that have easy breakfast items.

For dinner, try the Speghetti Warehouse on Spring Garden. if you sign up for emails you will get great offers like an entree with one.
I had a three course last week, 15 layer lasagna, stuffed mushrooms, and Tiramasu (sp). LARGE lemonade, for $11.99.
House salad, sourdough bread, yummmmmy.
All ahve parking free or meters.

There is a Best Western near the Rodian Museum, near the Franklin Inst. that is super affordable, I think they had the breakfast out too in the morning? Free parking.

Thank you all so much for the great suggestions!!! Not being a city person, the closer it is to where we are already, the better! It's pretty stressful going through all of this with my Mom, so to know we can unwind and get away from the hospital for a little while will be a relief. Thanks again Dis'ers!:cutie:
