Need advice. Time frame

My daughter got engaged a few weeks ago while in Epcot during the fireworks. We booked a DFTW for 10/2012. In my day, way back, the bride to be had an engagement party and a bridal shower. Do most people still have both. If so, what would your timeframe be to have an engagement party? Getting Save the Date cards made up now to send out in July 2011. Since this is a destination wedding, is having an engagement party and later on a bridal shower asking too much for people. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think an engagement party and bridal shower are quite common. Engagement parties are usually soon after engagement (within the first few months) while showers are usually within 2-3 months of the wedding. Since your daughter is having such a long engagement, I think you should be okay timing-wise. I don't think it's too much to ask people to attend both because you're not asking for gifts at an engagement party.
