Heres the situation I need some advice on: I have been worknig in the hotel business for 11 years as a front desk clerk, and have basically helped do it all from payroll/accounts payable and receivable, handled emergencies, trained countless people and so on.
I was offered a general management positon at another hotel in town and I am scared to take it as I have never managed, or had total responsibility.
Are there any good managemwnt websites that can help me decide if I am ready.
The job I am in currently is going nowhere as the current manager is well...a twit(putting it mildy. Help
:(

I don't know of any web sites you can visit, but if you are given a chance like this, you HAVE to take it! You can always take some mangement courses at a local college. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't know of any web sites either. I've never worked in the industry so I have no idea what I'm talking about :o, but it seems to me if you were all ready offered the position, someone thinks you have the qualifications and can handle the job. :) Good luck with your decision. Sometimes fear can hold us back and that's a bad thing, other times it's good. I hope someone who works in the industry can help you out. :)

I agree with weirdeyes - TAKE IT! Then get them to foot the bill for a management training course - which they will most likely put you through anyway (as they want you to do it THIER way.)

I was made a shift manager at a taco bell when I was 18 years old. 18 years and being the only person responsible for the actions of others in the store..."managing" people twice my age...it wasn't all that hard...just my regular job, different uniform, and a whole lot of paperwork.

I say ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE!

Best of luck to you!

Take it! :)

No one is EVER completely ready for a position...you just have to jump in and keep your wits about you. You will learn what you need to know along the way. And when you, one day, know everything you need to know, you will find that you're ready to move up. Don't be afraid to succeed!;)

Take it and congratulations.:)

::yes:: ::yes::

I was offered a job 3 years ago that I thought was administrative when in reality it involved tons of accounting; definetly not my strong suit. I have done a good job so far, my boss is very pleased with my progress. I never thought I would learn as much as I have. It sounds like you are already doing most of the work of a manager without the benefit of the title or pay.
I say go for it.:)

website for help or reassurance:

http://management.about.com (very good articles on deciding about bus mangmt)

www.business.com

I use this websites to help me out about just to see what's going on in industry. Hope these help you.

Good Luck,
Tina

P.S. TAKE THE JOB...You'll be great

Go for it! I was recently promoted to a management position in my company and what others have said it right ... you are never completely prepared for it. But you can LEARN! This is a golden opportunity that does not come along often, so grab it now.

You have a lot of experience in the bank to draw on. You have a lot of knowledge stored.

A couple of books that have really helped me a lot are:

First, Break All The Rules (What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently) by Marcus Buckingham & Curt Coffman) -- terrific book; take a while to read and absorb what they say. It can really help you define your own management style (which will grow as you continue to work)

The New Supervisor's Survival Handbook by William A Salmon -- this book is packed with great examples and some how-to exercises on delegation, communication, motivation, problem solving, goal setting, and most importantly, handling the ins and outs of "politics."
