I am thinking about putting my #20 TDS (Pinnochio) pin up on Ebay. It is an error pin because instead of showing that it is #20 on the back, it shows that it is #30.

On the one hand, I like the bragging rights this error pin gives me. On the other hand, I don't know what kind of money I might be offered for it on Ebay. (Money talks.)

If you had a error/rare pin that you were going to sell on Ebay how would you go about listing it? I know I could put a reserve price on the pin so I don't get some ridiculously low amount, but then again I know that reserves sometimes scare people off (thereby reducing what you can get on a pin.)

What would you do if you were in my position?

I have sold a little on Ebay and bought a lot. ;)
I have used the Buy it Now feature, but generally don't. I don't list a reserve price. I just list a minimum bid.
As a buyer, I find it irritating when a seller shows a low minimum bid, but sets an unknown reserve price. And I don't often buy from those sellers. I'm sure it's their way of getting around paying a larger listing fee to Ebay. But it's annoying to a buyer.
As for your starting price -- whatever you think is fair.
Error pins are just a matter of taste to an individual collector -- just like all pins.
Good luck on whatever you decide.

Hi Lynn,

You might want to look for your pin in the "completed items" section of the eBay search. That way you can get an idea of the prices the pin has previously brought, then make a decision on whether you want to sell it or not.

I always start my auctions at a reasonable price, based on what I paid for a pin, and add a couple of bucks. Occasionally, a LE will do better than a couple of bucks, but that makes up for the times I don't get a bid.

I never use a reserve price, and I state that in my auction copy. Most bidders hate them, because you don't know what kind of price the seller is looking for. Although you will pay a higher amount for insertion, you will eliminate bidders who think they will win with a low bid, and narrow your auction to serious players.

I hope this helps you...
