My son has no fashion sense(his words) and neither do I really. He wants to get some shoes that he can wear with jeans to look a little more dressy than sneakers, but that he can also wear with khakis. We found some Sperry topsiders online, but when I asked on my facebook page, someone said they would be "socially awkward":confused3 These are the ones we were looking at.

Anyone have any advice? I can't afford more than $80.

Yea...ummm no. Unless he likes them and friends have them.

Maybe some brown Skechers? I wear these with jeans but I'm a 53 year old man.

Here guys do wear sperrys. Also Tom's. Both of my sons have slightly dressy boots. Brown leather made to look a bit worn. Sort of like this -

My sons are a bit fashion obsessed and own several types of sneakers that they would consider slightly dressy too like Vans. But we are a beach town and what's dressy here might be different.

Good call Tigeroo. I was coming back to suggest the small boot types, they seem to be in style now. A Skecher brand here.

Sperrys are in again. Young people don't usually wear the old school ones though. They go for colors or different styles. I work in an urban high school and they're in there too.

Anything that's not a boot type? He like more low top shoes.

those sketchers would not be ok here for a young guy. There are shoes that look like those boots only lower cut.

Oops, and one complicating factor is that he wears a size 16. That makes it kind of hard to find a lot of styles.

My DS18 wears the topsider but with out the ties. I did not think he would wear them but that is all he wears when not in his cowboy boots.

That changes everything. My sister orders my nephews large sizes from Nordstrom.
These would work http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/rockport-ledge-hill-wingtip/3344757?origin=category&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=Sand+Suede&resultback=0 or thesehttp://shop.nordstrom.com/S/hush-puppies-authentic-saddle-shoe/3324653?origin=category&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=BLACK+SUEDE&resultback=0 But around here Sperrys are popular too. Things must be regional. He will always be working to find things with that size.

I love Sperrys. Everyone wears them at my university. Trust me; they're VERY in with 'preppy' kids. IMO, your friend is just out of the loop.

My oldest wears Topsiders if he's not wearing tennis shoes or flip flops. They're popular at his school.

My teen boy wears shoes like in the OP, so do many of his friends. We live in Germany though, so the styles are not always the same, it it seems other posters are also seeing them on teen boys in the US.

Does the Facebook friend commenting have teens or work with them?:confused3
